Comment on: 'Depolarization corrections to the coercive field in thin-film ferroelectrics'

چکیده
The Letter by Dawber et al. [J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 15 L393 (2003)] notes that incomplete screening in the electrodes of a ferroelectric capacitor can result in an underestimate for the true coercive field in films of nanometer thickness. We show that their estimate of the magnitude of this correction it too large in the case of ferroelectric copolymer LangmuirBlodgett films and, as a result, invalidates the claim that finite-size scaling of the ferroelectric coercive field is evident in films thinner than 15 nm. Depolarization Corrections to the Coercive Field in Thin-Film Ferroelectrics
Empirically the coercive field needed to reverse the polarization in a ferroelectric increases with decreasing film thickness. For ferroelectric films of 100 microns to 100 nanometers in thickness the coercive field has been successfully described by a semi-empirical scaling law. Accounting for depolarization corrections, we show that this scaling behavior is consistent with field measurements ...
متن کاملnfluence of imperfect surface on properties of ferroelectric thin film
Using the Ginzburg–Landau–Devonshire theory and taking into account structural difference between imperfect surface layer and bulk ferroelectrics, the behavior of ferroelectric thin film coated with two metallic electrodes is studied. The effects of the imperfect surface layer are to reduce effective polarization, produce non-uniform polarization distribution and lower the phase transition temp...
متن کاملPhysics of thin-film ferroelectric oxides
This review covers important advances in recent years in the physics of thin-film ferroelectric oxides, the strongest emphasis being on those aspects particular to ferroelectrics in thin-film form. The authors introduce the current state of development in the application of ferroelectric thin films for electronic devices and discuss the physics relevant for the performance and failure of these ...

Using the Ginzburg–Laudau–Devonshire theory and taking into account structural difference between imperfect surface layers and bulk ferroelectrics, the dielectric and pyroelectric properties of ferroelectric thin films coated with two metallic electrodes have been studied. The numerical results show that the effects of imperfect surface layers are to increase the effective dielectric susceptibi...
متن کاملKTa0.6Nb0.4O3 ferroelectric thin film behavior at microwave frequencies for tunable applications.
In this study about the relationships between structural and microwave electrical properties of KTa(1-x)NbxO3 (KTN) ferroelectric materials, a KTN thin film was deposited on different substrates to investigate how KTN growth affects the microwave behavior. Interdigital capacitors and stubs were made on these films through a simple engraving process. Microwave measurements under a static electri...
