Beam Halo in Proton Linac Beams
نویسنده
چکیده
We review the present understanding of beam halo in proton linacs. Space-charge forces acting in mismatched beams have been identified as a major cause of beamhalo. We introduce a new description of the halo using the ratio of moments of the distribution of beam coordinates. We describe the beam-halo experiment that is in preparation at Los Alamos, which will address questions about the beam profiles, maximum particle amplitudes, and rms-emittance growth associated with the halo.

The Beam Halo Experiment at LEDA
Due to the potentially adverse effects of the generation of halo particles in intense proton beams, it is imperative to have a clear understanding of the mechanisms that can lead to halo formation for current and proposed high-intensity linacs. To this end a theoretical model has been developed, which indicates that protons under the combined influence of strong space charge forces and periodic...

Spallation sources dedicated to neutron scattering experiments, as well as multi-purpose facilities serving several applications call for pulsed mode operation of a high intensity proton linac. There is general agreement on the superconducting technology for the high-energy part, which offers some advantages, like higher gradient capabilities or operational costs reduction, as compared to room-...

Recently, it was proposed to use negatively charged electron beams for compensation of beam-beam effects due to protons in the Tevatron collider [1]. We show that a similar compensation is possible in space-charge dominated low energy proton beams. The idea has a potential of several-fold increase of the FNAL Booster beam brightness. Best results will be obtained using three electron lenses aro...
