Scintillating Screens Study for Leir/lhc Heavy Ion Beams
نویسندگان
چکیده
It has been observed on different machines that scintillating ceramic screens (like chromium doped alumina) are quickly damaged by low energy ion beams. These particles are completely stopped on the surface of the screens, inducing both a high local temperature increase and the electrical charging of the material. A study has been initiated to understand the limiting factors and the damage mechanisms. Several materials, ZrO2, BN and Al2O3, have been tested at CERN on LINAC3 with 4.2MeV/u lead ions. Alumina (Al2O3) is used as the reference material as it is extensively used in beam imaging systems. Boron nitride (BN) has better thermal properties than Alumina and Zirconium oxide (ZrO2). BN has in fact the advantage of increasing its electrical conductivity when heated. This contribution presents the results of the beam tests, including the post-mortem analysis of the screens and the outlook for further measurements. The strategy for the choice of the screens for the Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR), currently under construction at CERN, is also explained.

Leir: towards the Nominal Lead Ion Beam
The Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) is a central piece for LHC ion operation at CERN, transforming long Linac3 pulses into high density bunches needed for LHC. The first phase of LEIR commissioning successfully attained its goal of providing the so-called “early ion beam” (one bunch of 2.25 10 Lead ions) needed for the first LHC ion runs with reduced luminosity. Studies in view of generating the bea...
متن کاملExperience with the Gts-lhc Ion Source
For the heavy ion programme of the LHC a new ECRIS type heavy ion source had to be designed and built for Linac3 to fullfill the intensity requirements. Experience acquired during the installation and commissioning of the source and during operation for the LEIR ring commissioning will be presented. The performance of the source and its reliability are evaluated. Further requirements for high r...

To reach the design luminosity for lead-ions in the LHC, the present Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) has to be converted into a Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR). Since the present ECR lead-ion source does not provide sufficient intensity, the main goal of LEIR is to act as a low-energy (4.2MeV/u) accumulator where the ion beam is stacked and cooled (with the help of an electron-cooler) to reach the...

In preparation for the heavy ion program of the LHC [1], accumulation and cooling tests with lead ion beams have been performed in the LEAR storage ring [2]. These tests have revealed that due to the unexpected, large outgassing of the vacuum system, the dynamic pressure of the ring could not be maintained low enough to reach the required beam intensities. To determine the actions necessary to ...
متن کاملExperimental Results from Leir Schottky System
The high density Lead ion beams, needed for LHC, are obtained in the Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) at CERN by multi-turn injection followed by electron cooling and stacking. During this injection and stacking phases, where the circulating beam is unbunched, diagnostics with Schottky noise are used for probing essential beam parameters, such as tune, momentum spread, emittance and their evolution w...
