Polybrominated biphenyls in lactating Michigan women: persistence in the population.

چکیده
Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) were inadvertently introduced into livestock feed in Michigan in 1973, resulting in widespread contamination of the state's food supply. Details of this unfortunate incident have been extensively documented (Carter 1976; Meester 1979). Approximately 12 months after the spill, several reports demonstrated the presence of PBB in human tissues including fat and blood serum as well as in breast-milk specimens (Brilliant et al. 1978; Landrigan 1980). Brilliant et al. (1978) described the distribution of PBB body burdens among a random sample of lactating women, and estimated that as many as 97 per cent of Michigan residents could be expected to have detectable levels of PBB. The distribution of PBB body burdens was skewed geographically, higher levels being found in the more populous lower peninsula. Other studies have suggested that levels of PBB in the Michigan population decrease with increasing distance from contaminated farms (Wolff et al. 1978) and appear to be higher in males and children (Wolff et al. 1982). There are insufficient data available to describe agespecific distributions.

Workshop on Scientific Aspects of Polybrominated Biphenyls East Lansing, Michigan, October, 1978
This issue of ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH PERSPECTIVES represents papers presented at the October 1977 conference on the Scientific Aspects of Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB) sponsored by the Michigan State Agricultural Experiment Station at the Kellogg Center for Continuing Education, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan. PBBs were originally synthesized for use as a fire retardant in the...
متن کاملBreast cancer among women in Michigan following exposure to brominated flame retardants.
In this updated follow-up, we investigated the breast cancer experience among women in Michigan exposed to brominated flame retardants, some 30 years following exposure. Michigan residents were enrolled in a study cohort after exposure to polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) through the consumption of contaminated food products. PBB concentrations were measured in serum at the time of enrolment. Can...
متن کاملIncidence of thyroid disease following exposure to polybrominated biphenyls and polychlorinated biphenyls, Michigan, 1974-2006.
Thyroid hormones, which influence body metabolism and development, could be affected by persistent organic pollutants. We sought to examine the relationship between polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and thyroid disease. We employed incidence density sampling to perform a nested case control analysis of the Michigan Long-Term PBB Cohort. Cohort members (n=3333)...

Background: Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBBs) and Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) are semi-permanent Halogenated compounds that are mainly used in flame retardant. These contaminants as endocrinedisrupting associated with dysfunction of immune, endocrine and nervous systems. Influence various physiological processes such as menarche, birth weight, fetus growth and development, head circumf...
متن کاملBreast-milk monitoring to measure Michigan's contamination with polybrominated biphenyls.
In 1973 and 1974, several thousand Michigan dairy farms were contaminated by polybrominated biphenyls (P.B.B.) as the result of an industrial accident. An unknown quantity of contaminated meat and dairy products entered the food chain before contaminated farms were quarantined. To determine the extent of human exposure, P.B.B. concentrations were measured in human breast milk, which was collect...
