I understood that it was through the bite of an infected mosquito (Culex) larva passing through the bite puncture though capable of penetrating the healthy skin. I have just read in the ' Science and Practice of, Surgery', 1948 ed. (vol. I, p. 258) by Romanis and Mitchiner, that the infection is through drinking water in which the bodies of mosquitoes (intermediate hosts) have fallen. Handheld Jones in ' Essentials of Modern Surgery', 1948, on p. 301, writes in a similar way.
