Incidental findings of a Vestibular Schwannoma on Brain MRI.
نویسنده
چکیده
Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the gold standard for diagnosing a vestibular schwannoma (VS). The prevalence of VS ranges from 0.02-2.4%; the incidence is 20 per million per year. This case report describes two cases of VS identified on brain MRIs that were not related to the purpose of the MRI examination. A literature search was performed to find existing audiometric-based protocols for guiding MRI referrals. Asymmetric sensorineural hearing loss appeared to be the most important indication for excluding VS. However, no consensus was found on the significance of asymmetry or on the severity required to exclude VS. In light of the current absence of a reliable audiometric-based protocol for MRI referral, it seems reasonable to refer every patient with audiovestibular symptoms for a brain MRI, despite the view that the low number of incidental findings may not justify the additional cost.

Simultaneous Contralateral Vestibular Schwannoma and Glomus Tumor of the Temporal Bone- A Case Report
Introduction: Presence of vestibular schwannoma and a simultaneous glomus jugulare tumor is an extremely rare event. There is only one case report regarding the incidence of a contralateral vestibular schwannoma, along with a glomus jugulare tumor. Herein, we present the second case with a contralateral tumor. Case Report: A 69-year-old woman presented with a long hist...

Acoustic neuromas (AN) are schwann cell-derived tumors that commonly arise from the vestibular portion of the eighth cranial nerve also known as vestibular schwannoma(VS) causes unilateral hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo and unsteadiness. In many cases, the tumor size may remain unchanged for many years following diagnosis, which is typically made by MRI. In the majority of cases the tumor is s...
متن کاملIncidental findings on MRI scans of patients presenting with audiovestibular symptoms
BACKGROUND The evaluation of patients presenting with audiovestibular symptoms usually includes MRI of the internal auditory meatus, the cerebellopontine angle and the brain. A significant percentage of these scans will present unexpected, incidental findings, which could have important clinical significance. OBJECTIVE To determine the frequency and clinical significance of incidental finding...
متن کاملEvaluation of Incidental Findings on Lumbosacral MRI in Patients with Low Back Pain
Background & Aims: Low back pain is one of the most common problems and a symptom-related reason for visits to a physician, and one of the important causes of disability. It may also impose great costs on the individual and the health system. Most patients with back pain will recover within 4 to 6 weeks. One of the best paraclinical diagnostic methods is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which ...

The objectives of this study were to identify signs of vestibular nerve suffering through a bedside vestibular examination protocol in case of sudden sensorineural unilateral hearing loss without spontaneous signs of vestibular impairment and to propose a bed-side vestibular examination based protocol for the focused execution of gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) only if a ve...
