چکیده

Low-temperature magnetic properties of condensed matter system is investigated microscopically with high-frequency electron spin resonance (ESR). Experiments are carried out conventionally with a transmission method, but its sensitivity is not often sufficient to detect ESR signals of systems with small number of spins such as newly synthesized microcrystals. To attain better sensitivity, we focus on a novel technique of multi-frequency ESR system utilizing a microcantilever. In this method, ESR signal is detected as a torque change associated with the absorption of electromagnetic wave. Its sensitivity is greatly increased due to mechanical resonance when the modulation frequency of electromagnetic wave coincides with the eigenfrequency of the cantilever. In this study, we have succeeded in mechanical detection of ESR signals in the millimeter wave region up to 240 GHz. The achieved signal-to-noise ratio was greater than 10 for 1-μg sample of Co-Tutton salt, corresponding to the spin sensitivity of 10 spins/G.

Variable Coupling Scheme for High Frequency Electron Spin Resonance Resonators Using Asymmetric Meshes.

The sensitivity of a high frequency electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometer depends strongly on the structure used to couple the incident millimeter wave to the sample that generates the ESR signal. Subsequent coupling of the ESR signal to the detection arm of the spectrometer is also a crucial consideration for achieving high spectrometer sensitivity. In previous work, we found that a means...

Study of the size-dependant vibration behavior of an AFM microcantilever with a sidewall probe

In this paper, the resonant frequency and sensitivity of an atomic force microscope (AFM) with an assembled cantilever probe (ACP) are analyzed utilizing the modified couple stress theory. The proposed ACP comprises a horizontal microcantilever, an extension and a tip located at the free end of the extension, which make AFM capable of scanning the sample sidewall. First, the governing different...
