Pathological Significance of Ophthalmic Foreign Bodies

چکیده
Submit Manuscript | http://medcraveonline.com posterior segment FBs is derived from metal fragments. A vegetative FB such as wood may reach inner part of eye but is located usually in the anterior segment [3,4]. Animal matter such as cilia can be carried along with denser matter to the posterior segment [1,2,5]. Ocular damage caused by intraocular foreign bodies (IOFB) can occur by two mechanisms; (1) penetrating injury with its secondary complications and (2) by the presence of IOFB itself causing damage from microbial endophthalmitis, toxicity and other inflammatory reactions [4,6,7]. Pathological evaluation of various FB in the eye and adnexa can give us bunch of information about the damages to the structures.

Foveal Protection with Viscoelastic Material during Removal of Posterior Segment Foreign Bodies
Foreign bodies may drop during removal from the posterior segment and result in foveal damage. Due to high specific gravity and viscosity, ophthalmic viscosurgical devices (OVDs) can dampen and redirect the force of the dropping foreign body and therefore protect the fovea. Herein we describe our technique of foveal protection with OVDs and briefly demonstrate the results in five eyes with larg...
متن کاملRetained intraocular foreign bodies and visual prognosis.
FOREIGN bodies lodged in the eye following perforating injuries are serious ophthalmic emergencies. The retention of a foreign particle within the eye-ball may result in infection, sympathetic ophthalmitis, local irritative and chemical reaction apart from the mechanical damage caused at the time of the accident. The visual prognosis is extremely variable because of so many factors such as exte...
متن کاملIndications and Techniques of Endoscope Assisted Vitrectomy
The popularization of ophthalmic endoscopy has been promoted by recent technological advancements that increase the number of indications for endoscopy. These advancements have improved the endoscope's capabilities in its two fundamental surgical advantages: (1) bypassing anterior segment opacities, and (2) visualizing anteriorly positioned structures such as the ciliary bodies and sub-iris spa...
متن کاملTraumatic Endophthalmitis due to Cellulosimicrobium cellulans
Purpose. To report a case of traumatic endophthalmitis due to Cellulosimicrobium cellulans. Design. Case report. Methods. Retrospective chart review. Results. To our knowledge, this is the first report of traumatic endophthalmitis due to C. cellulans, which did not respond to intravitreal antibiotics or repeat vitrectomy and ultimately led to the discovery of an occult intraocular foreign body....
متن کاملForeign body giant cell reactions and ossification associated with benign melanocytic naevi.
AIMS To assess the incidence of foreign body giant cell reactions and ossification in benign/melanocytic naevi; and to examine their pathological features to gain an insight into their pathogenesis. METHODS Intradermal (n = 185) and compound naevi (n = 110) from a routine histology service, together with 60 naevi submitted to an ophthalmic pathologist, were examined for foreign body reactions...
