Adaptive picture slicing for distortion-based classification of video packets

چکیده
We present a new algorithm to dynamically identify perceptually important regions in pictures of a video sequence. For each macroblock, the distortion that its loss would cause at the decoder is computed. High-distortion macroblocks are then grouped together into slices to be protected with forward error correction or to be sent as “premium” packets. We developed the approach for the case of video sequences encoded with the ISO MPEG-2 video coding standard. We then applied the algorithm to classify video packets within a 1-bit Differentiated Services architecture: slices were grouped either into premium packets, to be sent on a “virtual wire,” or into regular packets, to be sent as best-effort traffic. In packet losses, the proposed distortion-based classification scheme outperforms sourcetransparent packet-marking techniques and provides substantially higher PSNR values than the regular best-effort case sending as little as 10% of the packets as premium traffic. In order to enhance the accuracy of the motion vector (MV) estimation and also reduce the error propagation issue during the estimation, in this paper, a new adaptive error concealment (EC) approach is proposed based on the information extracted from the video scene. In this regard, the motion information of the video scene around the degraded MB is first analyzed to estimate the motion type of...

متن کاملNew adaptive interpolation schemes for efficient meshbased motion estimation
Motion estimation and compensation is an essential part of existing video coding systems. The mesh-based motion estimation (MME) produces smoother motion field, better subjective quality (free from blocking artifacts), and higher peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) in many cases, especially at low bitrate video communications, compared to the conventional block matching algorithm (BMA). Howev...
متن کاملAdaptive Spectral Separation Two Layer Coding with Error Concealment for Cell Loss Resilience
This paper addresses the issue of cell loss and its consequent effect on video quality in a packet video system, and examines possible compensative measures. In the system's enconder, adaptive spectral separation is used to develop a two-layer coding scheme comprising a high priority layer to carry essential video data and a low priority layer with data to enhance the video image. A two-step er...
