COMPaS: a PC-based SMP cluster

چکیده
82 IEEE Concurrency R symmetric multiprocessor systems have become widely available, both as computational servers and as platforms for high-performance parallel computing. The same trend is found in PCs—some have also become SMPs with many CPUs in one box. Clusters of PC-based SMPs are expected to be compact, cost-effective parallel-computing platforms. At the Real World Computing Partnership, we have built a PC-based SMP cluster, COMPaS (Cluster of MultiProcessor Systems),1 as the next-generation cluster-computing platform (see the sidebar). Our objective is to study the performance characteristics of a PC-based SMP cluster and the programming models and methods for an SMP cluster. There have been many other research efforts in cluster computing, including the Illinois High Performance Virtual Machines project (http://www.csag.cs.uiuc.edu/projects/clusters. html), the Berkeley NOW project,2 and Jazznet (http://math. nist.gov/jazznet/index.html). However, few researchers have studied a homogeneous, mediumscale PC-based SMP cluster like our COMPaS.

COMPaS: A Pentium Pro PC-based SMP Cluster and Its Experience
We have built an eight node SMP cluster called COMPaS (Cluster Of Multi-Processor Systems), each node of which is a quadprocessor Pentium Pro PC. We have designed and implemented a remote memory based user-level communication layer which provides lowoverhead and high bandwidth using Myrinet. We designed a hybrid programming model in order to take advantage of locality in each SMP node. Intra-no...
متن کاملPerformance Improvement by Overlapping Computation and Communication on SMP Clusters
Clusters of SMPs (Symmetric Mul-tiprocessor Systems) have emerged as important platforms for high performance computing. As a programming scheme on SMP clusters, we proposed hybrid shared memory/distributed memory programming. In order to tolerate inter-node communication , we overlapped the inter-node communication and computation using remote memory based user-level communication primitives N...
متن کاملDesign of OpenMP Compiler for an SMP Cluster
In this paper, we present a design of OpenMP compiler for an SMP cluster. Although clusters of SMPs are expected to be one of the cost-e ective parallel computing platforms, both of inter and intra node parallelism must be exploited to achieve high performance. These two levels of structure complicate parallel programming. The OpenMP is an emerging standard for parallel programming on shared-me...
متن کاملPerformance Analysis of PC-CLUMP based on SMP-Bus Utilization
PC-CLUMP (Cluster of Multiprocessor) is one of the most cost-e ective commodity-based platforms for HPC applications. The increasing number of CPUs per SMP node realizes very compact system size and very low price on the network interface per processor keeping the number of CPUs in the system. However, the performance of SMP-bus on such an SMPPC node is relatively poor compared with that of SMP...
متن کاملCost-Performance Evaluation of SMP Clusters
Clusters of Personal Computers have been proposed as potential replacements for expensive compute servers. One limitation in the overall performance is the interconnection network. A possible solution is to use multiple processors on each node of the PC cluster. Parallel programs can then use the fast shared memory to exchange data within a node, and access the interconnection network to commun...
