چکیده

Salt-free polyelectrolyte behaviour which is typically observed at low polymer concentrations for polyelectrolyte aqueous solutions and random ionomer non-aqueous solutions (in polar solvents) (i.e., negative angular dependence of the reciprocal scattering in static light scattering and an appearance of the fast mode in dynamic light scattering) has been observed for monotelechelic ionomer solutions in a polar solvent. This indicates that only single charge (per chain) is sufficient to produce intermolecular electrostatic interactions, which are responsible for such characteristic behaviour. However, the 'characteristic' behaviour, which is typically observed at higher concentrations for polyelectrolyte and random ionomer solutions (i.e., large positive apparent radius of gyration in static scattering and appearance of the slow mode in addition to the fast mode in dynamic scattering) has not been observed to date for monotelechelic ionomer solutions. The absence of highconcentration characteristics for the monotelechelic ionomer solutions gives additional insight as to the nature and structure of 'heterogeneities' in salt-free polyelectrolyte solutions, which is still controversial.

Prediction of solvent-induced morphological changes of polyelectrolyte diblock copolymer micelles.

Self-assembly processes of polyelectrolyte block copolymers are ubiquitous in industrial and biological processes; understanding their physical properties can also provide insights into the design of polyelectrolyte materials with novel and tailored properties. Here, we report systematic analysis on how the ionic strength of the solvent and the length of the polyelectrolyte block affect the sel...

Novel Surfactant-Free Stable Colloidal Nanoparticles Made of Randomly Carboxylated Polystyrene Ionomers

Ionomers consist of macromolecules with a few mole percent ionic groups attached to the hydrophobic backbone. The introduction of the ionic groups on a polymer chain can dramatically change the bulk properties, such as the glass transition temperature and miscibility with other materials.1 Most of the past studies of ionomers were concentrated on their rheological properties. In nonpolar solven...

Rheology of dilute and semidilute suspensions of spherical polyelectrolyte brushes

The viscosity, g, of dilute aqueous suspensions of spherical polyelectrolyte brushes is discussed. The spherical polyelectrolyte brushes consist of a solid polystyrene core of 100-nm diameter onto which linear poly(acrylic acid) chains are grafted. The relative viscosity, g/gS (gS is the viscosity of the solvent) of these suspensions is studied as a function of shear rate in the presence of dif...

Complexation of Proteins with a Strong Polyanion in an Aqueous Salt-free System

We studied the formation in a salt-free solution of complexes between potassium poly(vinyl alcohol) sulfate (KPVS), a strong polyelectrolyte, and proteins with known amino-acid sequences: papain, human serumalbumin, lysozyme, ribonuclease, trypsin, and pepsin. Turbidimetric titration, togetherwith quasielastic light scattering (QELS), static light scattering (SLS), and electrophoretic light sca...

Correlation length of hydrophobic polyelectrolyte solu - tions

– The combination of two techniques (Small Angle X-ray Scattering and Atomic Force Microscopy) has allowed us to measure in reciprocal and real space the correlation length ξ of salt-free aqueous solutions of highly charged hydrophobic polyelectrolyte as a function of the polymer concentration Cp, charge fraction f and chain length N . Contrary to the classical behaviour of hydrophilic polyelec...
