Linearly polarized light-induced anisotropic orientation of binuclear Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) Schiff base complexes including or without methyl orange in PVA

It is well known that a lot of organic polymers of liquid crystals containing azo-groups exhibit optical anisotropy after polarized UV light irradiation. In recent year, optical properties of anisotropic nanoparticles in polymers of non-crystalline solid being regularly aligned by external mechanical or magnetic stimulus have been studied with polarized fluorescence spectroscopy and Bragg reflection of visible light. We have systematically investigated organic/inorganic hybrid materials composed of chiral Schiff base metal complexes and azo-compounds in polymethyl methacrylate films as non-crystalline solid to discuss optical anisotropy and to form regularly alignment like artificial crystals ideally. In this study, we prepared organic/inorganic hybrid materials composed of water soluble binuclear Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) Schiff base complexes (Ni2L, Cu2L, and Zn2L) without or with a typical azo-compound methyl orange (MO), Ni2L+MO+PVA and Cu2L+MO+PVA, in a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film to investigate linearly polarized UV light induced anisotropic orientation of the components due to Weigert effect.
