Evaluation of Stress and Geomechanical Characteristics of a Potential Site for Co2 Geological Storage in Central Alberta, Canada
نویسنده
چکیده
Storage of CO2 in deep geological formations has been identified as the most likely near-future option to significantly reduce industrial greenhouse gas emissions in Alberta. In order to assess the risks associated with potential leakage of the injected CO2 the factors influencing the potential loss of containment need to be evaluated. Currently, there is a lack of publicly available, high quality, geomechanical data needed for this evaluation. This issue has been addressed in this paper by the utilization of log correlations to establish the geomechanical properties of the geological formations at a potential large scale CO2 sequestration site.

Geological storage of CO2 that has been captured at large, point source emitters represents a key potential method for reduction of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. However, this technology will only be viable if it can be guaranteed that injected CO2 will remain trapped in the subsurface for thousands of years or more. A significant issue for storage security is the geomechanical respon...

Anthropogenic effects on climate can be mitigated through various measures, among them being CO2 sequestration in geological media. Geological sinks for CO2 do not need any major new technological development; the technology exists and has been applied for other uses. The challenge is rather to identify the most appropriate methods and sites for long-term sequestration. There are several potent...

Naturally fractured carbonate reservoirs (NFCRs) comprise the majority of the oil and gas reservoirs around the Persian Gulf. Many of these reservoirs have a long history of exploitation, but vast amounts of oil remain in place. A major redevelopment process for light oil based NFRs will likely be the use of horizontal wells combined with gravity drainage at constant pressure based on voidage...

Climate change is one of the major global concerns. Emission of anthropogenic greenhouse gases is the main cause of climate change. One way of reducing the emissions is the application of carbon capture and storage (CCS) in geological formations. In this study, feasibility of CCS was studied in an Iranian gas production area located in the northern Persian Gulf coast in the south of country. Th...

3D and 4D geomechanical can be time-consuming to build and calibrate. However, once such a model is built, it is relative straightforward to use this model for various field development and management applications. In so doing, the return on the initial investment of time and effort in the creation of a 4D geomechanical model can be substantial. I present a case study where a 4D geomechanical m...
