چکیده

We study identical mass black hole binaries with spins perpendicular to the binary’s orbital plane. These binaries have individual spins ranging from s=m2 0:90 to 0.90, (s1 s2 in all cases) which is near the limit possible with standard Bowen-York puncture initial data. The extreme cases correspond to the largest initial spin simulations to date. Our results expand the parameter space covered by Rezzolla et al., and when combining both data sets, we obtain estimations for the minimum and maximum values for the intrinsic angular momenta of the remnant of binary black hole mergers of J=M2 0:341 0:004 and 0:951 0:004, respectively. Note, however, that these values are reached through extrapolation to the singular cases js1j js2j 1 and thus remain as estimates until full-fledged numerical simulations provide confirmation.

Maximum black-hole spin from quasicircular binary mergers

Black holes of mass M must have a spin angular momentum S below the Kerr limit ( S=M 1), but whether astrophysical black holes can attain this limiting spin depends on their accretion history. Gas accretion from a thin disk limits the black-hole spin to gas & 0:9980 0:0002, as electromagnetic radiation from this disk with retrograde angular momentum is preferentially absorbed by the black hole....

Determining the population properties of spinning black holes

There are at least two formation scenarios consistent with the first gravitational-wave observations of binary black hole mergers. In field models, black hole binaries are formed from stellar binaries that may undergo common envelope evolution. In dynamic models, black hole binaries are formed through capture events in globular clusters. Both classes of models are subject to significant theoret...

Cosmological Black Hole Spin Evolution by Mergers and Accretion

Using recent results from numerical relativity simulations of black hole mergers, we revisit previous studies of cosmological black hole spin evolution. We show that mergers are very unlikely to yield large spins, unless alignment of the spins of the merging holes with the orbital angular momentum is very efficient. We analyze the spin evolution in three specific scenarios: (1) spin evolves onl...

Final mass and spin of black-hole mergers

We consider black holes resulting from binary black-hole mergers. By fitting to numerical results we construct analytic formulas that predict the mass and spin of the final black hole. Our formulas are valid for arbitrary initial spins and mass ratios and agree well with available numerical simulations. We use our spin formula in the context of two common merger scenarios for supermassive galac...

Relativistic SPH Calculations of Compact Binary Mergers

We review recent progress in understanding the hydrodynamics of compact binary mergers using relativistic smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) codes. Recent results are discussed for both double neutron stars and black hole – neutron star binaries. The gravitational wave signals from these mergers contain a lot of information about the masses and radii of the stars and the equation of state of...

Binary black hole mergers: Large kicks for generic spin orientations

We present results from several simulations of equal mass black holes with spin. The spin magnitudes are S=m2 0:8 in all cases, but we vary the spin orientations arbitrarily, inside and outside the orbital plane. We find that in all but one case the final merged black hole acquires a kick of more than 1000 km=s, indicating that kicks of this magnitude are likely to be generic and should be expe...
