Indicative Propositions

چکیده
Two new problems of bivalent propositional logic are proposed here: firstly, to distinguish the sense of propositions, besides the logical value and secondly, to analyze the ”ponderal” difference between two parts of a proposition: subject-predicate. 1 Relational projections and extensions Let r = (A1, A2, A3, R) be a ternary relation (see [3]). Starting with this, we may define three binary relations (induced projections), namely r12 = (A1, A2, R12), r23 = (A2, A3, R23) and r13 = (A1, A3, R13) defined by (x1, x2) ∈ R12 ⇐⇒ there exists x3 ∈ A3 such that (x1, x2, x3) ∈ R and its analogs. Denote r < x1, x2 >= {x3 ∈ A3 | (x1, x2, x3) ∈ R} and analogously r < x2, x3 > and r < x1, x3 >, where (x1, x2, x3) ∈ A1×A2× A3. Proposition 1.1 xi rij xj ⇐⇒ r < xi, xj >6= ∅ , where i, j ∈ {1, 2, 3}, i < j. This proposition follows by the above definitions. To each of the binary relations rij , i, j ∈ {1, 2, 3}, i < j, we associate a ternary ponderal extension ∼ r ij = (Ai, Aj , N, ∼ Rij) defined by (x1, x2, n) ∈ ∼ R12 ⇐⇒ (x1, x2) ∈ R12 and |r < x1, x2 > | = n and its analogs. Remark. The relational projections and extensions may be generalized to the case of arbitrary n-ary relations. Received: October, 2001.

Do Indicative Conditionals Express Propositions?
In this paper I will focus on the question of what theoretical object we should use to represent the meaning of certain sentences. In particular, I will focus on the question of whether we should use propositions to represent the meaning of indicative conditionals. Before getting into this question I’ll try to locate it in the broader scheme of things. In recent years, the so-called semantic/pr...
متن کاملThe Probabilities of Conditionals Revisited
According to what is now commonly referred to as "the Equation" in the literature on indicative conditionals, the probability of any indicative conditional equals the probability of its consequent of the conditional given the antecedent of the conditional. Philosophers widely agree in their assessment that the triviality arguments of Lewis and others have conclusively shown the Equation to be t...
متن کاملMultiple propositions, contextual variability, and the semantics/pragmatics interface
The term 'multiple-proposition (MP) theory' will be used to refer to theories which countenance counterexamples to the widespread implicit assumption that a simple indicative sentence (relative to a context of utterance) semantically expresses at most one proposition.
متن کاملThe Role of the Scholars` Tradition in Formulating Moral Propositions, with an Emphasis on Muhaqqiq Isfahani`s View
The issue of the source of ethical value is one of the most important issues in the field of metaethics. Moral philosophers have come up with different perspectives on this issue. Some Islamic thinkers, including Muhaqqiqi Isfahani, have considered the rationals` tradition as the formulating cause for moral propositions. This research is intended to emphasize on the viewpoint of Muhaqqiqi Isfah...
متن کاملStalnaker ’ s Thesis in Context
A popular form of contextualism concerning indicative conditional statements embraces the following three theses: (i) Indicative conditionals semantically express (i.e. can be used to assert the truth of) propositions. (ii) Which proposition is asserted by an utterance of an indicative conditional sentence sometimes depends on the context in which it is uttered. Moreover, (iii) which propositio...
