Indeed, it is very difficult to conceptualize the patient‘s behavioural changes and symptomatic variations except in terms of regression, displacement, intellectualization, reaction formation, projection, overcompensation and the rest. These dynamic formulations serve to provide a better understanding of behavioural complexities than does the language of chemistry.
