Soil moisture variability: a comparison between detailed field measurements and remote sensing measurement techniques

Surface soil moisture, defined here as the volumetric soil water content in the top 10 cm of the soil, shows a great deal of variability. The variance observed within a square metre can be as large as for a whole field. For that reason alone, point measurements in low quantities cannot be representative for the average soil moisture of a whole field. Soil moisture estimated by remote sensing techniques, especially by microwave sensors, might give adequate information on areallyaveraged soil moisture. If these techniques are to be worthwhile in hydrological modelling, it will be necessary to link the various spatial resolutions of the different instruments to each other and to point-scale measurements. Despite differences in instrument configuration it is shown that it is possible, under certain circumstances, to downscale high resolution areal soil moisture estimates to low resolution soil moisture estimates using data from HAPEX-Sahel'92 and Washita'94. Variabilité de l'humidité du sol: une comparaison entre des mesurages détaillés des champs et les mesurages réalisés par télédétection Résumé L'humidité du sol, définie ici comme l'humidité volumétrique des 10 cm supérieurs du sol, montre une très grande variabilité. La variance observée dans un mètre carré peut être aussi grande que celle d'un champ entier. C'est pour cette raison que les mesurages d'un petit nombre de points ne peuvent pas être représentatifs de la moyenne de l'humidité du sol pour tout un champ. L'humidité du sol estimée par télédétection, en particulier l'utilisation des micro-ondes, peut fournir d'utiles informations sur la moyenne de l'humidité. Pour que ces techniques soient utiles en modélisation hydrologique, il est nécessaire que l'on puisse relier les résultats obtenus ponctuellement et selon différentes résolutions spatiales. Malgré des différences de configuration des instruments il est possible dans certaines circonstances de dégrader à une résolution plus grossière les informations sur l'humidité des sols obtenues à haute résolution comme cela a été démontré à l'aide des données de l'expérience HAPEX-Sahel'92 et de celles de Washita'94.
