چکیده

I. Reinhard,* C. Callegari, A. Conjusteau, K. K. Lehmann, and G. Scoles Department of Chemistry, Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey 08544 (Received 18 February 1999) Purely rotational transitions of a molecule embedded in large 4He clusters have been detected for the first time. The saturation behavior shows that, in contrast to previous expectations, the microwave line profiles are dominated by inhomogeneous broadening mechanisms. Spectral holes and peaks produced by microwave-microwave double resonance have widths comparable to those of single resonance lines, indicating that relaxation occurs among quantum states of the inhomogeneous distribution of each rotational level, at a rate ø10 times faster than rotationally inelastic relaxation. Finite size effects and rotational relaxation in superfluid helium nanodroplets: Microwave-infrared double-resonance spectroscopy of cyanoacetylene

Microwave-infrared double-resonance spectroscopy has been used to probe the solvation environment and its influence on the rotational relaxation of a cyanoacetylene molecule embedded in a superfluid He nanodroplet. The results support a model in which ~within any given rotational state! the guest molecules are distributed over a set of spectroscopically inequivalent states which are most likely...

A Chemical Potential "Battery" for Superfluid 4He Weak Links

Research and development of superfluid weak links has been hindered by the absence of a source of dc chemical potential, similar to a simple battery or voltage source for analogous superconducting devices. We describe here a method for generating a dc chemical potential difference, ∆μ , across a weak link array in superfluid 4He. The presence of a ∆μ forces quantum oscillations at a Josephson f...

Investigating the Lapse in Third Sound Signal from Superfluid 4He Adsorbed on Carbon Nanotubes

Two theoretical models are developed and tested to understand a particular mode of superfluid vibration called third sound. In particular we are trying to explain a brief lapse in third sound in early 4He film development on a carbon nanotube substrate. We use a resonant cavity of nanotubes at 1.3 K and introduce 4He gas. Using a variable-frequency heat pulse and a thermometer, we utilize the t...

Dynamics of liquid 4He in vycor

Using inelastic neutron scattering, we have observed well-defined phonon-roton ( p-r) excitations in superfluid 4He in Vycor over a wide wave-vector range, 0.3</=Q</=2.15 A(-1). The p-r energies and lifetimes at all temperatures are the same as in bulk liquid 4He. However, the weight of the single p-r component does not scale with the superfluid fraction rho(S)(T)/rho as it does in the bulk. In...
