A Gradient Grammar Approach to Concord Variation in Existential there+be Constructions

چکیده

‘Gradient grammar’ (Bresnan & Hay 2006) refers to statistical theories of language competence. A number of studies (Bod et al. 2003, Bresnan et al. 2005, Gries 2007, O’Connor et al. 2004, Snider & Zaenen 2006, Wasow & Arnold 2005, among others) have explored such probabilistic variation where speakers choose among grammatical options (dative and genitive alternations, complementizer optionality, and so on). English existential THERE+BE (‘ETB’, Crawford 2005) constructions, however, offer an opportunity to apply stochastic analysis to an alternation where one of the forms is prescriptively ungrammatical: a choice between typical English number agreement and the otherwise proscribed discord that is, in fact, productive with ETBs in many dialects.

A Gradient Grammar Approach to Concord Variation in Existential There+Be Constructions

English existential there+be constructions (ETB, as coined in Crawford 2005, e.g., Waiter, there’s a fly in my soup) are well known to exhibit variable concord (e.g., There’s lots of stars out tonight; There are lots of stars out tonight). Existing analyses either dismiss this observed lack of consistent ETB verb agreement as un-analyzable or explain it as the product of more general verb agree...

An Analysis of the Korean [manyak ... V-telato] Construction : An Indexed Phrase Structure Grammar Approach

Concord adverbial constructions in Korean show unbounded dependency relationships between two non-empty entities. There are two different types of unboundedness involved: one between a concord adverbial and a verbal ending and the other between the adverbial as a modifier and a predicate. In addition, these unboundedness relationships exhibit properties of “downward movement” phenomena. In this...

Type shifting in construction grammar: An integrated approach to aspectual coercion*

Implicit type shifting, or coercion, appears to indicate a modular grammatical architecture, in which the process of semantic composition may add meanings absent from the syntax in order to ensure that certain operators, e.g., the progressive, receive suitable arguments (Jackendo¤ 1997; De Swart 1998). I will argue that coercion phenomena actually provide strong support for a sign-based model o...

An Inquiry into Existential Constructions

Existential constructions play an important role in the development of Generative Grammar. Their special natures urge linguists to pay painstaking effort to give them a unified account. At first we have a brief review of the relevant study of these constructions and examine their strong points and weakness. On the basis of their study, we assume that in existential constructions of SVO language...

Construction as a Theoretical Entity : An Argument Based on Mandarin Existential Sentences

The role that constructions play in a linguistic theory has changed throughout the evolution of generative theories. Construction specific rules are common when transformations are envisioned as tree to tree operations in classical TG. On the other extreme, constructions, as well as all structural properties, are regarded as derived linguistic properties predictable from various principles in r...
