Local Betweenness for Finding Communities in Networks

چکیده

ABSTRACT The betweenness centrality measure has been widely used for detecting community structure in networks, in particular in the “GN” algorithm due to Girvan and Newman. This suffers from low speed because the betweenness measure is computed from the entire network, and it has been largely supplanted by faster algorithms that can detect community structure using more local methods in place of betweenness. In contrast, we propose an algorithm (a variant of GN) based on a local form of betweenness, which yields good results and is much faster. The algorithm can be used with a single parameter: the average diameter of the communities to be found. It is especially effective in detecting small-diameter communities in large networks, with a time complexity of only O(n log n) for sparse networks.

A Fast Algorithm to Find Overlapping Communities in Networks

Many networks possess a community structure, such that vertices form densely connected groups which are more sparsely linked to other groups. In some cases these groups overlap, with some vertices shared between two or more communities. Discovering communities in networks is a computationally challenging task, especially if they overlap. In previous work we proposed an algorithm, CONGA, that co...

Hierarchical Decomposition for Betweenness Centrality Measure of Complex Networks

Betweenness centrality is an indicator of a node's centrality in a network. It is equal to the number of shortest paths from all vertices to all others that pass through that node. Most of real-world large networks display a hierarchical community structure, and their betweenness computation possesses rather high complexity. Here we propose a new hierarchical decomposition approach to speed up ...

Community Structure based on Node Traffic in Networks

Finding community structure in networks has been always the prerequisite for the analysis of network structure and its properties. Based on node traffic, an efficient method for calculating betweenness measure is proposed. It is used iteratively to remove edges with high betweenness score from the network, thus splitting network into communities. The score is recalculated after each removal. Th...

Minimal paths between communities induced by geographical networks

In this work we investigate the betweenness centrality in geographical networks and its relationship with network communities. We show that vertices with large betweenness define what we call characteristic betweenness paths in both modeled and real-world geographical networks. We define a geographical network model that possess a simple topology while still being able to present such betweenne...

Detecting global bridges in networks

The identification of nodes occupying important positions in a network structure is crucial for the understanding of the associated real-world system. Usually, betweenness centrality is used to evaluate a node capacity to connect different graph regions. However, we argue here that this measure is not adapted for that task, as it gives equal weight to " local " centers (i.e. nodes of high degre...
