چکیده

Carboxyhaemoglobin concentrations (COHb) have been measured in groups of individuals smoking while engaged in different activities. The three groups chosen (meat porters, office workers, and pregnant women) had finger-prick blood samples taken at about six hours into their working day. COHb was measured by the method of Commins and Lawther (1965), a method subsequently shown to have a mean error of 0-67% (SD 0 65) in the range 0-40% COHb (Lily, Cole, and Hawkins, 1972). A highly significant difference (P < 0 005) was found between the COHb

End-tidal Carbon Dioxide Measurements in Unintentional Non-Fire-Related Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Background: Poisoning with carbon monoxide occurs occasionally worldwide, and the gold diagnostic standard is to measure carboxyhemoglobin level in the blood. This study investigated the correlation between carboxyhemoglobin and the end-tidal carbon dioxide levels in 50 patients with carbon monoxide poisoning. Methods: We recruited 50 volunteer patients who had been admitted to the Emergency S...

The measurement of exhaled carbon monoxide in healthy smokers and non-smokers.

The measurement of exhaled carbon monoxide (CO) level may provide an immediate, non-invasive method of assessing smoking status. The aims of this study were to use a portable CO monitor to compare the exhaled CO levels in established smokers and non-smokers. The exhaled CO levels were measured in 322 subjects (243 healthy smokers, 55 healthy non-smokers, 24 passive smokers) who applied to healt...

Use of carboxyhaemoglobin levels to predict the development of diseases associated with cigarette smoking.

Carboxyhaemoglobin (COHb) levels in tobacco smokers vary throughout the day since they are affected by the pattern of tobacco consumption and the rate at which COHb is eliminated. A method is described whereby a single COHb measurement together with a recent smoking history may be used to estimate the average COHb "boost" produced by each cigarette, the total daily carbon monoxide (CO) uptake f...

Levels of exhaled carbon monoxide in healthy active and passive smokers.

BACKGROUND Cigarette smoke is the major and most common indoor source of carbon monoxide. CO combines with haemoglobin to form carboxyhaemoglobin (COHb) which hinders oxygen transport and causes myocardial infarction and coronary heart disease. CO damages the endothelium of large and medium arteries and contributes to the development of atherosclerosis. MATERIAL AND METHOD Participants in the...

Mucociliary clearance and its relation with the level of physical activity in daily life in healthy smokers and nonsmokers.

OBJECTIVES To investigate the relationship between mucociliary transport and physical activity in daily life (PADL) in smokers and nonsmokers. METHODS Fifty-two current smokers were submitted to assessment of mucociliary transport (Sacharin Transit Time, STT), carbon monoxide levels in the exhaled air, lung function and smoking history. In addition, subjects kept a pedometer worn at the waist...
