چکیده

The genetic variance of inbred sires is increased and variance due to additive x additive effects proportionately more than that due to additive ones. In case of inbreeding by mating sire to daughters the time interval elite sire – son needs not to be elongated so that the genetic progress could be increased by this procedure. This pertains even more to the procedure where inbred sires are produced from sib mating. Use of such sires should increase the genetic gain via the sire son path by about 10 %

Identification of main and epistatic QTLs for grain yield related traits in a recombinant inbred lines population of rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Rice yield as a complex trait is the main target in most rice breeding programs. To map the main and epistatic QTLs controlling grain yield and yield components, an experiment was carried out using a 129 F6 recombinant inbred lines population (IRA population) originated from a cross between Alikazemi / IR67017-180-2-1-2, in 2015 growing season in two locations, Rasht and Tonekabon, Iran.  The e...

The Struggle to Exploit Non-additive Variation

While animal breeders largely focus on improvement using additive genetic variance, inbreeding and asexual reproduction allow plant breeders to at least partially exploit nonadditive genetic variance as well. We briefly review various approaches used by breeders to exploit dominance and epistatic variance, discuss their constraints and limitations, and examine what (if anything) can be done to ...

Quantitative trait loci affecting survival and fertility-related traits in Caenorhabditis elegans show genotype-environment interactions, pleiotropy and epistasis.

We have identified, using composite interval mapping, quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting a variety of life history traits (LHTs) in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Using recombinant inbred strains assayed on the surface of agar plates, we found QTL for survival, early fertility, age of onset of sexual maturity, and population growth rate. There was no overall correlation between survi...

Estimates of Variances Due to Sire × Herd Effects for Weights of Hereford Cattle

Estimating variances due sire × herd effects requires a large number of sires to be represented in multiple herds, otherwise too much variation between animals is ‘picked up’ as variance due to sire × herd effects, and heritability estimates are biased downwards. Such bias can be avoided by using only records for progeny of multiple-herd use sires to estimate the additive genetic variance. Esti...

Mapping QTL with additive effects and additive x additive epistatic interactions for plant architecture in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

In bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), crop height is an important determinant of agronomic performance. To map QTLs with additive effects and additive×additive epistatic interactions, 148 recombinant inbred lines and their parents, (‘YecoraRojo’ and Iranian landrace (No. #49)) were evaluated under normal and water deficit conditions. The experiments were carried out on research farms of Mahaba...
