چکیده

In grid networks, distributed resources are interconnected by wide area network to support compute and data-intensive applications, which require reliable and efficient transfer of gigabits (even terabits) of data. Different from best-effort traffic in Internet, bulk data transfer in grid requires bandwidth reservation as a fundamental service. Existing reservation schemes such as RSVP are designed for real-time traffic specified by reservation rate, transfer start time but with unknown lifetime. In comparison, bulk data transfer requests are defined in terms of volume and deadline, which provide more information, and allow more flexibility in reservation schemes, i.e., transfer start time can be flexibly chosen, and reservation for a single request can be divided into multiple intervals with different reservation rates. We define a flexible reservation framework using time-rate function algebra, and identify a series of practical reservation scheme families with increasing generality and potential performance, namely, FixTime-FixRate, FixTime-FlexRate, FlexTimeFlexRate, and Multi-Interval. Simple heuristics are used to select representative scheme from each family for performance comparison. Simulation results show that the increasing flexibility can potentially improve system performance, minimizing both blocking probability and mean flow time. We also discuss the distributed implementation of proposed framework.

A New Framework for Increasing the Sustainability of Infrastructure Measurement of Smart Grid

Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is one of the most significant applications of the Smart Grid. It is used to measure, collect, and analyze data on power consumption.  In the AMI network, the smart meters traffics are aggregated in the intermediate aggregators and forwarded to the Meter Data Management System (MDMS). The infrastructure used in this network should be reliable, real-time an...

Scheduling Advance Reservation Requests for WDM Networks with Static Traffic Demands

Telecommunication and grid computing applications demand high bandwidth data channels that offer guarantees with respect to service availability. Such applications include: remote surgery, remote experimentation, video on-demand (VOD), teleconferencing, and bulk transfers. Furthermore, by forecasting traffic patterns internet service providers (ISP) attempt to optimize network resources in orde...

Advance lightpath reservation for WDM networks with dynamic traffic

Advance reservation is a topic that is rarely discussed within the domain of wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) networks. However, for many emerging applications in the telecommunication and/or grid computing industries, a demand for a high bandwidth communication channel as well as a guarantee on resource availability certainly exists. Such applications include: remote surgery, remote exper...

DiskRouter: A Flexible Infrastructure for High Performance Large Scale Data Transfers

The steady increase in data sets of scientific applications, the trend towards collaborative research and the emergence of grid computing has created a need to move large quantities of data over wide-area networks. The dynamic nature of network makes it difficult to tune data transfer protocols to use the full bandwidth. Further, data transfers are limited by the bottleneck link and different l...
