چکیده

1987 SUMMARY Thirty-jive volunteers responded when they first perceived an increase in apparent size o f a collimated, two-dimensional image of an Orbiter vehicle. The test variables of interest included the presence o f afixed angular reticle within the field of view (FOV); three initial Orbiter distances; three constant Orbiter approach velocities corresponding to 1.6, 0.8, and 0.4% of the initial distance per second; and two background starfield velocities. It was found that (1) at each initial range, increasing approach velocity led to a significantly larger distance between the eye and Orbiter image at threshold; (2) including the fixed reticle in the FOVproduced a significantly smaller distance between the eye and Orbiter image at threshold; and (3) increasing background star velocity during this judgment led to a significantly smaller distance between the eye and Orbiter image at threshold. The last two findings suggest that other detail within the FOV may compete for available attention which otherwise would be available for judging image expansion; thus, the target has to approach the observer nearer than otherwise if these details were present. These findings are discussed in relation to previous research and possible underlying mechanisms.

Visual perception of touchdown point during simulated landing.

Experiments examined the accuracy of visual touchdown point perception during oblique descents (1.5 degrees -15 degrees ) toward a ground plane consisting of (a) randomly positioned dots, (b) a runway outline, or (c) a grid. Participants judged whether the perceived touchdown point was above or below a probe that appeared at a random position following each display. Although judgments were unac...

Collision judgment when using an augmented-vision head-mounted display device.

PURPOSE A device was developed to provide an expanded visual field to patients with tunnel vision by superimposing minified edge images of the wide scene, in which objects appear closer to the heading direction than they really are. Experiments were conducted in a virtual environment to determine whether users would overestimate collision risks. METHODS Given simulated scenes of walking or st...

Relative contributions of visual and auditory spatial representations to tactile localization.

Spatial localization of touch is critically dependent upon coordinate transformation between different reference frames, which must ultimately allow for alignment between somatotopic and external representations of space. Although prior work has shown an important role for cues such as body posture in influencing the spatial localization of touch, the relative contributions of the different sen...

Influence of the instructions on the performance and establishment of memorization strategies in space judgments.

Studies of visual space perception have been assuming that people have an internal representation of the physical space that surrounds them. A variety of psychophysical procedures has been used in an attempt to measure the properties of visual space. The goal of the present study was to evaluate the accuracy of the mental representation and the strategies adopted to acquire and retain visuo-spa...

Interaction between visual status, driver age and distracters on daytime driving performance

This study investigated the effects of visual status, driver age and the presence of secondary distracter tasks on driving performance. Twenty young (M=26.8years) and 19 old (M=70.2years) participants drove around a closed-road circuit under three visual (normal, simulated cataracts, blur) and three distracter conditions (none, visual, auditory). Simulated visual impairment, increased driver ag...

The Effect of Color Space Selection on Detectability and Discriminability of Colored Objects

In this paper, we investigate the effect of color space selection on detectability and discriminability of colored objects under various conditions. 20 color spaces from the literature are evaluated on a large dataset of simulated and real images. We measure the suitability of color spaces from two different perspectives: detectability and discriminability of various color groups. Through exper...
