The Discrete Fourier Transform, Part 4: Spectral Leakage
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper is part 4 in a series of papers about the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) and the Inverse Discrete Fourier Transform (IDFT). The focus of this paper is on spectral leakage. Spectral leakage applies to all forms of DFT, including the FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) and the IFFT (Inverse Fast Fourier Transform). We demonstrate an approach to mitigating spectral leakage based on windowing. Windowing temporally isolates the Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) in order to amplitude modulate the input signal. This requires that we know the extent, of the event in the input signal and that we have enough samples to yield a sufficient spectral resolution for our application. This report is a part of project Fenestratus, from the skunk-works of DocJava, Inc. Fenestratus comes from the Latin and means "to furnish with windows".

Comparative Study of Exponential Signal by an Interpolated DFT Algorithm
In this paper, exponential signals in the frequency domain are accurately analyzed by an algorithm, and the peaks of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) result are adopted to obtain parameters that include amplitudes, frequencies, damping, and phases. There are two steps for this algorithm: interpolated DFT and leakage elimination. Interpolated DFT refers to the three neighboring spectral line...
متن کاملA Robust Extrapolation Method for Curtailed Aperture Reconstruction in Acoustic Imaging
Acoustic Imaging based sound localization using microphone array is a challenging task in digital-signal processing. Discrete Fourier transform (DFT) based near-field acoustical holography (NAH) is an important acoustical technique for sound source localization and provide an efficient solution to the ill-posed problem. However, in practice, due to the usage of small curtailed aperture and its ...
متن کاملInterpolation Algorithms of DFT for Parameters Estimation of Sinusoidal and Damped Sinusoidal Signals
Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) is probably the most popular signal processing tool. Wide DFT use is partly dedicated to fast Fourier Transform (FFT) algorithms (Cooley & Tukey, 1965, Oppenheim et al., 1999, Lyons, 2004). DFT may also be efficiently computed by recursive algorithms in the window sliding by one sample (Jacobsen & Lyons, 2003, Duda, 2010). Unfortunately, DFT has two main drawbac...
متن کاملAn Approach Based on Asynchronous Sampling and Fast Hartley Transforms for Evaluating Harmonics of Periodic Signals with Negligible Leakage
An algorithm based on Fast Hartley Transform (FHT) that uses a digital voltmeter for measuring the harmonic parameters of low-frequency signals with negligible leakage is presented. The algorithm was compared favorably in speed with a previous one based on discrete Fourier transforms.
متن کاملFree and Forced Transverse Vibration Analysis of Moderately Thick Orthotropic Plates Using Spectral Finite Element Method
In the present study, a spectral finite element method is developed for free and forced transverse vibration of Levy-type moderately thick rectangular orthotropic plates based on first-order shear deformation theory. Levy solution assumption was used to convert the two-dimensional problem into a one-dimensional problem. In the first step, the governing out-of-plane differential equations are tr...
