Optimization of angular and frequency compounding in ultrasonic attenuation estimations.

چکیده
Previous reports have shown that the variance in ultrasound attenuation measurements is reduced when spatial and frequency compounding were applied in data acquisition and analysis. This paper investigates factors affecting the efficiency of compound attenuation imaging methods. A theoretical expression is derived that predicts the correlation between attenuation versus frequency slope (beta) estimates as a function of the increment between measurement frequencies (deltaf ) and the angular separation between beam lines (Delta (theta)). Theoretical results are compared with those from attenuation measurements on tissue-mimicking phantoms and from simulation data. Both predictions and measurement results show that the correlation between beta estimates as a function of (Delta f ) is independent of the length of the radio frequency (rf) data segment over which beta is derived. However, it decreases with an increase in the length of the data segment used in power spectra estimates. In contrast, the correlation between beta estimates as a function of delta(theta) decreases when the rf data segment length is longer or the frequency of the signal is higher. Correlation of ultrasonic scatterer size estimates for the statistical analysis and optimization of angular compounding.
Ultrasonic scatterer size estimates generally have large variances due to the inherent noise of spectral estimates used to calculate size. Compounding partially correlated size estimates associated with the same tissue, but produced with data acquired from different angles of incidence, is an effective way to reduce the variance without making dramatic sacrifices in spatial resolution. This wor...
متن کاملThe Ability of Ultrasonic Characterization to Extract the Dose Distribution of MAGIC-f Polymer Gel
Background & Aims: Today, different imaging techniques have been studied in the reading of radiationsensitive polymer gels dosage. Due to limitations of imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT), ultrasound techniques are proposed for dose-dependent parameter extraction. In this study, using MAGIC-f (methacrylic and ascorbic acid in gelatin initiat...
متن کاملFrequency-dependent attenuation-compensation functions for ultrasonic signals backscattered from random media.
Estimations of scattering parameters, such as average scatterer diameter, from rf signals backscattered from random media (tissues) are made from the frequency dependence of the rf signal. The frequency dependence of the rf signal backscattered from the medium is seen in the normalized power spectrum. The normalized power spectrum is found by taking the squared magnitude of the Fourier transfor...
متن کاملSpatial Compounding of Ultrasonic Diagnostic Images for Rotating Linear Probe with Geometric Parameter Error Compensation
In ultrasonic medical imaging, spatial compounding of images is a technique where ultrasonic beam is steered to examine patient tissues in multiple angles. In the conventional ultrasonic diagnostic imaging, the steering of the ultrasonic beam is achieved electronically using the phased array transducer elements. In this paper, a spatial compounding approach is presented where the ultrasonic pro...
متن کاملAn Estimation of Wave Attenuation Factor in Ultrasonic Assisted Gravity Drainage Process
It has been proved that ultrasonic energy can considerably increase the amount of oil recovery in an immiscible displacement process. Although many studies have been performed on investigating the roles of ultrasonic waves, based on the best of our knowledge, little attention has been paid to evaluate wave attenuation parameter, which is an important parameter in the determination of the energy...
