Distributed Marking in Sport Corrections: A Conversation Analysis of Synchronized Swimming
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper is an empirically based contribution on the communication of corrections in synchronized swimming. Our claim is that marking is a socially orgnanized skill that can be found in sports corrections. Conversation Analysis provides the framework to locate the pathways of communication modalities in real professional trainings. Through video-aided ethnographic work, which includes observation and interviewing the Spanish Olympic team for four months, we captured standardized communication patterns. We analyzed the video of the training sessions with ELAN software for micro-interactions. Our results show that the modalities of speech, marking, gesture and gaze appear in synchronized swimming. There is an epistemological asymmetry between the trainer and the swimmers as experts in different domains. Still, we found instances of distributed marking through analysis of gaze behavior. Marking for others in synchronized swimming has a cognitive function that goes beyond individual reflexivity and recall. Corrections in sports training are a product of socially managed turn taking.

Nutritional recommendations for synchronized swimming.
The sport of synchronized swimming is unique, because it combines speed, power, and endurance with precise synchronized movements and high-risk acrobatic maneuvers. Athletes must train and compete while spending a great amount of time underwater, upside down, and without the luxury of easily available oxygen. This review assesses the scientific evidence with respect to the physiological demands...
متن کاملComparative analysis of substance use in ballet, dance sport, and synchronized swimming: results of a longitudinal study.
There have been few studies comparing substance use and misuse (SU&M) in different performing arts forms. Herein, we identified and compared SU&M in women studying an art (ballet, n = 21), a non-Olympic sport (dance sport, n = 25), and an Olympic sport (synchronized swimming, n = 23). The sample of variables comprised general, educational, and sport factors, as well as SU&M data, including cons...

Questioning practice constitutes one of the typical and fundamental interactional tools in L2 teaching. Much L2 research on teacher questions has been quantitative studies focusing on identifying question types and their roles in language acquisition and meaning negotiation. However, by drawing on conversation analysis within a sociocultural perspective, this study examines qualitatively how EF...

متن کاملThe Reliability, Validity and Applicability of Two Sport-Specific Power Tests in Synchronized Swimming
Sport-specific tests are rarely investigated in synchronized swimming (synchro). The aim of this research was to study the reliability and the validity of two sport-specific tests that are based on synchro elements, namely, the Barracuda thrust ("Barracuda") and the Boost. The Barracuda is a move in which the swimmer begins in the back pike position (head down with the legs perpendicular to the...
