چکیده

It is shown that the two-part Minimum Description Length Principle can be used to discriminate among different models that can explain a given observed dataset. The description length is chosen to be the sum of the lengths of the message needed to encode the model plus the message needed to encode the data when the model is applied to the dataset. It is verified that the proposed principle can efficiently distinguish the model that correctly fits the observations while avoiding over-fitting. The capabilities of this criterion are shown in two simple problems for the analysis of observed spectropolarimetric signals. The first is the de-noising of observations with the aid of the PCA technique. The second is the selection of the optimal number of parameters in LTE inversions. We propose this criterion as a quantitative approach for distinguising the most plausible model among a set of proposed models. This quantity is very easy to implement as an additional output on the existing inversion codes. Subject headings: polarization — methods: data analysis, statistical, numerical

Minimum Description Length Induction, Bayesianism, and Kolmogorov Complexity

The relationship between the Bayesian approach and the minimum description length approach is established. We sharpen and clarify the general modeling principles minimum description length (MDL) and minimum message length (MML), abstracted as the ideal MDL principle and defined from Bayes’s rule by means of Kolmogorov complexity. The basic condition under which the ideal principle should be app...

The Minimum Description Length Principle in Coding and Modeling

We review the principles of Minimum Description Length and Stochastic Complexity as used in data compression and statistical modeling. Stochastic complexity is formulated as the solution to optimum universal coding problems extending Shannon’s basic source coding theorem. The normalized maximized likelihood, mixture, and predictive codings are each shown to achieve the stochastic complexity to ...

Model Selection Based on Minimum Description Length.

We introduce the minimum description length (MDL) principle, a general principle for inductive inference based on the idea that regularities (laws) underlying data can always be used to compress data. We introduce the fundamental concept of MDL, called the stochastic complexity, and we show how it can be used for model selection. We briefly compare MDL-based model selection to other approaches ...

Minimum Description Length Principle

The minimum description length (MDL) principle states that one should prefer the model that yields the shortest description of the data when the complexity of the model itself is also accounted for. MDL provides a versatile approach to statistical modeling. It is applicable to model selection and regularization. Modern versions of MDL lead to robust methods that are well suited for choosing an ...

Model Selection and the Principle of Minimum Description Length

This paper reviews the principle of Minimum Description Length (MDL) for problems of model selection. By viewing statistical modeling as a means of generating descriptions of observed data, the MDL framework discriminates between competing models based on the complexity of each description. This approach began with Kolmogorov’s theory of algorithmic complexity, matured in the literature on info...
