Interactions between Vernalization and Photoperiod on the Flowering and Bolting of Different Turnip Varieties

چکیده
The interactions between vernalization and photoperiodic effects on the flowering of 12 turnip varieties were examined under controlled environment. Seedlings of all varieties bolted and flowered under a long-day condition of 24 h day-length (LD) when the germinated seeds had been pre-exposed to low temperature at 3 •Ž (LT) for 30 days. Under the LD condition, the ratio of flower formation of all the varieties except for 'Tennoji' significantly decreased as the duration of LT treatment was shortened to less than 7 days. With LT treatment of more than 14 days, 80 to 100% of plants in all varieties formed flower buds under LD. When the seedlings were subjected to either LT and subsequently grown under a short-day condition of 8 h day-length (SD) or LD without LT treatment, the number of plants that formed flower buds substantially decreased. Furthermore, the effect of seed vernalization was counteracted by subsequent SD conditions under which the vernalized seedlings were grown throughout the experiment. Namely, flower formation and bolting of the vernalized seedlings were significantly inhibited when the LT-treated seedlings were subsequently grown under SD. These flowering responses of turnip plants to temperature and photoperiod significantly differed among the varieties used. We have classified the turnip varieties into five groups. 'Tennoji', 'Sho-

Bolting and flowering control in sugar beet: relationships and effects of gibberellin, the bolting gene B and vernalization
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Bolting, the first visible sign of reproductive transition in beets (Beta vulgaris), is controlled by the dominant bolting gene B (B allele), which allows for flowering under long days (LDs, >14 h light) without prior vernalization. The B-locus carries recessive alleles (bb) in sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L. spp. vulgaris), so that vernalization and LDs are required for boltin...
متن کاملThe FLC-like gene BvFL1 is not a major regulator of vernalization response in biennial beets
Many plant species in temperate climate regions require vernalization over winter to initiate flowering. Flowering Locus C (FLC) and FLC-like genes are key regulators of vernalization requirement and growth habit in winter-annual and perennial Brassicaceae. In the biennial crop species Beta vulgaris ssp. vulgaris in the evolutionarily distant Caryophyllales clade of core eudicots growth habit a...
متن کاملIdentification of Flowering-Related Genes Responsible for Differences in Bolting Time between Two Radish Inbred Lines
Late bolting after cold exposure is an economically important characteristic of radish (Raphanus sativus L.), an important Brassicaceae root vegetable crop. However, little information is available regarding the genes and pathways that govern flowering time in this species. We performed high-throughput RNA sequencing analysis to elucidate the molecular mechanisms that determine the differences ...
متن کاملThe Role of a Pseudo-Response Regulator Gene in Life Cycle Adaptation and Domestication of Beet
Life cycle adaptation to latitudinal and seasonal variation in photoperiod and temperature is a major determinant of evolutionary success in flowering plants. Whereas the life cycle of the dicotyledonous model species Arabidopsis thaliana is controlled by two epistatic genes, FLOWERING LOCUS C and FRIGIDA, three unrelated loci (VERNALIZATION) determine the spring and winter habits of monocotyle...
