Tempo effect on age-specific death rates

چکیده
It is widely known that shifts of cohort fertility schedule can produce misleading trends in period TFR. This note shows that such a “tempo bias” can occur in age-specific mortality as well: if the age distribution of cohort deaths shifts toward older (younger) ages, the period age-specific death rate is biased downward (upward). 1 Laboratory of Populations, Rockefeller University, 1230 York Avenue, New York, NY 10021-6399, U.S.A. Tempo Effects in Different Calculation Types of Period Death Rates
The question as to whether or not tempo effects distort the measurement of period mortality is controversial in recent demographic research. Only few publications, however, illustrate the underlying phenomenon of tempo effects, namely that the period death rate may increase although the mortality of all cohorts living during the analyzed period has fallen. Moreover, related literature only focu...
متن کاملExplaining fertility transition of a developing country: an analysis of quantum and tempo effect
BACKGROUND The Total Fertility Rate (TFR) is defined as the average number of births a woman would have if she were to live throughout the reproductive span and bear children at each age at the rates observed in a particular year or period. The current demographic explanation for decline in TFR is primarily attributed to an increase in postponement in pregnancy. Being cross-sectional, fertility...
متن کاملAnother Tempo Distortion: Analyzing Controlled Fertility by Age-specific Marital Fertility Rate
The rise in marital fertility in East Asian societies with very low fertility has been reported through analyses using the age-specific marital fertility rate (AMFR). Though the measure is often considered related to the average number of children married women have (CMF), we demonstrated that such an interpretation is often erroneous (AMFR problem) and valid only under limited conditions in mo...
متن کاملSex Differences in US Mortality Rates for Stroke and Stroke
Background and Purpose—Ischemic stroke accounts for 70% to 80% of all strokes, but intracerebral and subarachnoid hemorrhagic strokes have greater fatality. Age-standardized death rates from overall stroke are higher among men than women, but little is known about sex differences in stroke subtype mortality by race/ethnicity. Methods—We analyzed 1995 to 1998 national death certificate data to c...
متن کاملInfluenza Mortality in the United States, 2009 Pandemic: Burden, Timing and Age Distribution
BACKGROUND In April 2009, the most recent pandemic of influenza A began. We present the first estimates of pandemic mortality based on the newly-released final data on deaths in 2009 and 2010 in the United States. METHODS We obtained data on influenza and pneumonia deaths from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). Age- and sex-specific death rates, and age-standardized death rates...
