چکیده
An early paper (1932) by Majorana, that has received but scant attention, is reexamined in light of later developments. This pioneering paper constructs a relativistically invariant theory of arbitrary spin particles, develops and utilizes infinite dimensional representations of the homogeneous Lorentz group, and provides a mass spectrum for elementary particles. The relevance of Majorana’s approach and results to later and current research is explained. Reprinted with permission from the AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PHYSICS, Volume 34, Issue 4, pp. 314-318. Copyright 1966, American Association of Physics Teachers. We reproduce here the historical D. M. Fradkin 1966 paper whose role among the physicists of high energy was decisive; since then espressions like ”Majorana mass”, ”Majorana spinors” and ”Majorana neutrino” have become usual. The paper is based upon the work Teoria di Particelle con Momento Intrinseco Arbitrario, translated by Italiam from Edoardo Amaldi. Ignazio Licata†‡ c © Electronic Journal of Theoretical Physics. متن کاملLandau Levels of Majorana Fermions in a Spin Liquid.
Majorana fermions, originally proposed as elementary particles acting as their own antiparticles, can be realized in condensed-matter systems as emergent quasiparticles, a situation often accompanied by topological order. Here we propose a physical system which realizes Landau levels-highly degenerate single-particle states usually resulting from an orbital magnetic field acting on charged part...
متن کاملA Bound on Neutrino Masses From Baryogenesis
Properties of neutrinos, the lightest of all elementary particles, may be the origin of the entire matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe. This requires that neutrinos are Majorana particles, which are equal to their antiparticles, and that their masses are sufficiently small. Leptogenesis, the theory explaining the cosmic matterantimatter asymmetry, predicts that all neutrino masses are s...
متن کاملDesigner non-Abelian anyon platforms: from Majorana to Fibonacci
The emergence of non-Abelian anyons from large collections of interacting elementary particles is a conceptually beautiful phenomenon with important ramifications for fault-tolerant quantum computing. Over the last few decades the field has evolved from a highly theoretical subject to an active experimental area, particularly following proposals for trapping non-Abelian anyons in ‘engineered’ s...
متن کاملTowards quantum computation with Majorana fermions
In 1937 the Italian physicist Ettore Majorana proposed the existence of a massless, chargeless, spinless particle that is its own antiparticle. Such a Majorana fermion would have an extraordinarily large phase coherence time, making it an ideal building block for a quantum computer. However, no Majorana fermions are known to exist asfundamental particles. The recent discovery of topological sta...
