Statistics of Galactic Synchrotron and Dust Foregrounds: Spectra, Pdfs and Higher-order Moments

چکیده
We present statistical analysis of diffuse Galactic synchrotron emission and polarized thermal emission from dust. Both Galactic synchrotron emission and polarized thermal emission from dust reflect statistics of magnetic field fluctuations and, therefore, Galactic turbulence. We mainly focus on the relation between observed angular spectra and underlying turbulence statistics. Our major findings are as follows. First, we find that magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in the Galaxy can indeed explain diffuse synchrotron emission from high galactic latitude. Our model calculation suggests that either a one-component extended halo model or a two-component model, an extended halo component (scale height & 1kpc) plus a local component, can explain the observed angular spectrum of the synchrotron emission. However, discrete sources seem to dominate the spectrum for regions near the Galactic plane. Second, we study how star-light polarization is related with polarized emission from thermal dust. We also discuss the expected angular spectrum of polarized emission from thermal dust. Our model calculations suggest that Cl ∝ l−11/3 for l & 1000 and a shallower spectrum for l . 1000. Angular Spectra of Polarized Galactic Foregrounds
It is believed that magnetic field lines are twisted and bend by turbulent motions in the Galaxy. Therefore, both Galactic synchrotron emission and thermal emission from dust reflects statistics of Galactic turbulence. Our simple model of Galactic turbulence, motivated by results of our simulations, predicts that Galactic disk and halo exhibit different angular power spectra. We show that obser...

We present the first tests of a new method, the Correlated Component Analysis (CCA) based on second-order statistics, to estimate the mixing matrix, a key ingredient to separate astrophysical foregrounds superimposed to the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). In the present application, the mixing matrix is parameterized in terms of the spectral indices of Galactic synchrotron and thermal dust e...

We present a full-sky model of polarized Galactic microwave emission based on three years of observations by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) at frequencies from 23 to 94 GHz. The model compares maps of the Stokes Q and U components from each of the 5 WMAP frequency bands in order to separate synchrotron from dust emission, taking into account the spatial and frequency dependence...

We discuss the possible impact of astrophysical foregrounds on three recent exciting results of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments: the WMAP measurements of the temperature-polarization (TE) correlation power spectrum, the detection of CMB polarization fluctuations on degree scales by the DASI experiment, and the excess power on arcminute scales reported by the CBI and BIMA groups. A...
متن کاملMHD Turbulence as a Foreground for CMB Studies
Measurements of intensity and polarization of diffuse Galactic synchrotron emission as well as starlight polarization reveal power law spectra of fluctuations. We show that these fluctuations can arise from magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in the Galactic disk and halo. To do so we take into account the converging geometry of lines of sight for the observations when the observer is within t...
