چکیده

OBJECTIVES Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) has been proposed as an adjunctive modality for the treatment of swallowing disorders. We present data from a prospective case series to define and measure effects of a systematic therapy for chronic pharyngeal dysphagia using adjunctive NMES. METHODS Six adult patients with pharyngeal dysphagia received 15 sessions of a standardized protocol of swallowing exercises with adjunctive NMES. The patients completed clinical and instrumental baseline, posttreatment, and 6-month follow-up evaluations. Outcome measures included the proportion of patients who improved in clinical swallowing ability, functional oral intake, and change in body weight; patient perception of swallowing ability; and changes in kinematic aspects of swallowing. RESULTS Significant change was demonstrated for clinical swallowing ability (p < .042), functional oral intake (p < .02), weight gain (p < .026), and patient perception of swallowing ability (p < .043). Hyoid and laryngeal elevation during swallowing demonstrated bolus-specific patterns of change. No patient experienced a treatment-related or swallowing-related complication. Patients (4 of 5) who were followed out to 6 months after treatment maintained functional gains. CONCLUSIONS A systematic therapy for chronic pharyngeal dysphagia using adjunctive NMES produced improvement in clinical swallowing ability and functional oral intake without significant weight loss or complications.

Dysphagia in Stroke: A New Solution

Dysphagia is extremely common following stroke, affecting 13%-94% of acute stroke sufferers. It is associated with respiratory complications, increased risk of aspiration pneumonia, nutritional compromise and dehydration, and detracts from quality of life. While many stroke survivors experience a rapid return to normal swallowing function, this does not always happen. Current dysphagia treatmen...

The effects of surface neuromuscular electrical stimulation on post-stroke dysphagia: a systemic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE In this study, we intended to evaluate whether swallow treatment with neuromuscular electrical stimulation is superior to that without neuromuscular electrical stimulation, and whether neuromuscular electrical stimulation alone is superior to swallow therapy. METHODS We searched the PubMed and Scopus databases from their earliest record to 31 December 2014 for randomized and quasi-r...

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation in Dysphagia Management

ABSTRACT: Purpose: Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is a relatively new yet controversial approach to the treatment of dysphagia that is gaining clinical popularity. The purpose of this study was to contribute to our understanding of the clinical viability of NMES, in light of empirical controversy, by describing current trends in the use/nonuse of NMES and clinician-perceived barrie...

Effect of the Masako maneuver and neuromuscular electrical stimulation on the improvement of swallowing function in patients with dysphagia caused by stroke

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to compare improvements in swallowing function by the intervention of the Masako maneuver and neuromuscular electrical stimulation in patients with dysphagia caused by stroke. [Subjects and Methods] The Masako maneuver (n=23) and neuromuscular electrical stimulation (n=24) were conducted in 47 patients with dysphagia caused by stroke over a period of 4 weeks....

Comparison of treatment effect of neuromuscular electrical stimulation and thermal-tactile stimulation on patients with sub-acute dysphagia caused by stroke

[Purpose] The effectiveness of neuromuscular electrical stimulation in the rehabilitation of swallowing remains controversial. This study compared the effectiveness of neuromuscular electrical stimulation and thermal tactile oral stimulation, a traditional swallowing recovery treatment, in patients with sub-acute dysphagia caused by stroke. [Subjects and Methods] Subjects of the present study w...
