چکیده

Stiff-person syndrome (SPS) is a rare neurologic disease manifested by persistent muscle contractions causing marked rigidity in the affected individual . There are many case descriptions and clinical reviews in the neurologic literature, outlining a progression of knowledge from the early clinical description of SPS to advanced molecular biologic and immunologic studies implicating the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor system . We report a case of prolonged hypotonicity after general anesthesia in a patient with SPS and discuss the possible anesthetic interactions.

Anesthetic Considerations of Stiff-Person Syndrome: A Case Report.

Stiff-person syndrome (SPS) is a neurologic disorder characterized by painful involuntary episodes of severe muscle rigidity affecting the axial muscles and extremities. Although the etiology of SPS is unknown, it is suspected to involve the synthesis of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Symptoms of SPS are precipitated by sudden unexpected movements, noises, and stress. Additionally, SPS has been li...

Stiff person case misdiagnosed as conversion disorder: A case report

Background: Stiff person syndrome (SPS) is a rare neurological disease resulting in stiffness and spasm of muscles. It initially affects the axial muscles and then spread to limb muscles. Emotional stress exacerbated the symptoms and signs of the disease. The pathophysiology of the disease is caused by the decreased level of the glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) activity due to an autoantibody ...

Central Disorders of Hypersomnolence, Restless Legs Syndrome, and Surgery With General Anesthesia: Patient Perceptions

Introduction: The importance of obstructive sleep apnea in patients undergoing surgery with general anesthesia is well-defined, but the surgical and anesthetic implications of other sleep disorders are less clear. We sought to evaluate response to surgery with general anesthesia in patients with central disorders of hypersomnolence or restless legs syndrome. Methods: We surveyed patients on the...

Anesthetic experience using total intra-venous anesthesia for a patient with Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome -A case report-

We present here the case of a 33-month-old male patient with Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS) and who underwent tympanoplasty and myringotomy. WHS is caused by a rare chromosomal abnormality, which is the deletion of the short arm of chromosome number 4. The typical craniofacial features of WHS patients such as micrognathia, microcephaly and the muscular weakness can make using neuromuscular bloc...
