چکیده

The accepted model of color naming postulates that 11 “basic” color terms representing 11 common perceptual experiences show increased processing salience due to a theorized linkage between perception, visual neurophysiology, and cognition. We tested this theory, originally proposed by Berlin and Kay in 1969. Experiment 1 tested salience by comparing unconstrained color naming across two languages, English and Vietnamese. Results were compared with previous research by Berlin and Kay, Boynton and Olson, and colleagues. Experiment 2 validated our stimuli by comparing OSA, Munsell, and newly rendered “basic” exemplars using colorimetry and behavioral measures. Our results show that the relationship between the visual and verbal domains is more complex than current theory acknowledges. An interpoint distance model of color-naming behavior is proposed as an alternative perspective on color-naming universality and color-category structure. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The Use of Modifying Terms in the Naming and Categorization of Color Appearances in Vietnamese and English

Cross-cultural studies of color naming show that basic terms are universally the most frequently used to name colors. However, such basic color terms are always used in the context of larger linguistic systems when speciŽ c properties of color experience are described. To investigate naturalistic naming behaviors, we examined the use of modiŽ ers in English and Vietnamese color naming using an ...

Confidence Judgments on Color Category Best Exemplars

Although basic color terms and basic color appearances have been shown to produce higher confidence ratings in a variety of naming and judgment tasks, our findings suggest that when different ethnolinguistic cultures are compared, higher confidence is not strictly linked to the basic foci of Berlin and Kay nor the centroid samples identified by Boynton and colleagues. This raises important ques...

Color Categorization in Bilingual Populations: Korean-English Bilinguals

Empirical research on the influence of language on cognition often focuses on the domain of color categorization. With a global increase in bilingualism, investigating how semantic information is cognitively processed by speakers of two languages is especially important. For example, it remains uncertain whether a bilingual’s sensory representation of color appearance similarity is affected by ...

Color naming across languages reflects color use.

What determines how languages categorize colors? We analyzed results of the World Color Survey (WCS) of 110 languages to show that despite gross differences across languages, communication of chromatic chips is always better for warm colors (yellows/reds) than cool colors (blues/greens). We present an analysis of color statistics in a large databank of natural images curated by human observers ...

Semantic and Perceptual Representations of Color

Perceptual psychology widely operationalizes color appearance as a construct with very close, even isomorphic, ties to color naming structure. Indeed, a considerable body of psychological and psychophysics research uses naming–based tasks to derive structural properties of color appearance space. New research investigating the relations linking color similarity and color naming structures sugge...
