چکیده

-The crystalline and osmotic swelling of N~, Cs-, Mgand Ca-montmorillonite has been measured in dimethyl sulphoxide and in formamide, N-methyl formamide, dimethyl formamide, N-methyl acetamide and dimethyl acetamide. These liquids have similar dipole moments but their relative permittivities vary appreciably from values less than water to values greater than water. Na montmorillonite exhibits osmotic swelling (diffuse double layer development -d(001) ~ 19 A) in formamide and N-methyl formamide and Cs gives osmotic swelling behavior in formamide. Cs-montmorillonite in the crystalline swelling region give spacings greater than those found for water with all liquids. Mgand Ca-montmorillonite did not give spacings greater than 19 A in any of the liquids studied. The swelling behavior of montmorillonite is affected by relative permittivity but for liquids with a similar relative permittivity methyl substitution in the molecule may prevent the development of diffuse double layers on the particle surfaces.

Sorption and Diffusion of Organic Vapors in Two Fluoroelastomers

Immersion experiments with Aflas (I), poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-propylene), and Fluorel (II) [poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-perfluoropropylene)], showed greater swelling of I in nonpolar liquids and much higher swelling of II in polar liquids: over 100% (wt/wt) in two ketones and a phosphate ester. Sorption isotherms determined for toluene and acetone at 25 and 35°C were fitted with the Flory–R...

Swelling of acetylated wood in organic liquids

To investigate the affinity of acetylated wood for organic liquids, Yezo spruce wood specimens were acetylated with acetic anhydride, and their swelling in various liquids were compared to those of untreated specimens. The acetylated wood was rapidly and remarkably swollen in aprotic organic liquids such as benzene and toluene in which the untreated wood was swollen only slightly and/or very sl...

Permeability of Two Clayey Soils Exposed to Petroleum Products and Organic Solvents

Clayey soils are the most common material used for water sealing and undertake an important role in controlling landfill-related pollution. Organic liquids can adversely affect the effectiveness of clay liners by drastically increasing their hydraulic conductivity. The aim of this study is to investigate and compare the permeability in two types of clay with different plasticity, exposed to the...

Dual Ionic and Organic Nature of Ionic Liquids

Inherited the advantages of inorganic salts and organic solvents, ionic liquids (ILs) exhibit many superior properties allowing them promising green solvents for the future. Although it has been widely acknowledged that the unique features of ILs originate from their dual ionic and organic nature, its microscopic physical origin still remains blurry. In this work, by comparing the ion/molecule ...

Effect of silica nanoparticles on clay swelling and aqueous stability of nanoparticle dispersions

The results of the effects of electrolyte type and concentration, nanoparticle concentration, pH, and temperature on the mobility and aqueous stability of polyethylene glycol (PEG)-coated silica nanoparticles are presented. Nanoparticle mobility was evaluated based on the ability to inhibit montmorillonite swelling in aqueous solutions through visual swelling tests, and the results were quantif...
