چکیده

Concurrent access to shared data objects must be regulated by a concurrency control protocol to ensure correctness. Many concurrency control protocols require that a process set a lock on the data it accesses. Recently, there has been considerable interest in lock-free concurrency control algorithms. Lock-free algorithms ooer the potential for better system performance because slow or failed processes do not block fast processes. Process \slowdowns" can occur due to cache line faults, memory and bus contention, page faults, context switching, NUMA architectures, heterogeneous architectures, or diierences in operation execution time. Much work has been done to characterize the performance of locking algorithms, but little has been done to characterize the performance of lock-free algorithms. In this paper, we present a performance model for analyzing lock-free algorithms that studies the eeects of slowdowns on performance. We nd that lock-free algorithms are better than locking algorithms if the slowdowns are transient, but worse if the slowdowns are permanent. One implication of this result is that lock-free concurrent objects are appropriate for UMA architectures, but NUMA architectures require special protocols.

Lock-Free Algorithms for Thread Safe Programming

An object is lock-free if it guarantees that in a system where multiple threads are manipulating the object, some thread will complete its operation on the object in a finite number of steps, no matter what happens to other threads. More practically, lock-free programming is a technique to achieve thread safety without the use of locks, which are the current standard. Lock-free objects (LFOs) h...

A Formal Reduction for Lock-Free Parallel Algorithms

On shared memory multiprocessors, synchronization often turns out to be a performance bottleneck and the source of poor faulttolerance. Lock-free algorithms can do without locking mechanisms, and are therefore desirable. Lock-free algorithms are hard to design correctly, however, even when apparently straightforward. We formalize Herlihy’s methodology [13] for transferring a sequential implemen...

Novel Automated Method for Minirhizotron Image Analysis: Root Detection using Curvelet Transform

In this article a new method is introduced for distinguishing roots and background based on their digital curvelet transform in minirhizotron images. In the proposed method, the nonlinear mapping is applied on sub-band curvelet components followed by boundary detection using energy optimization concept. The curvelet transform has the excellent capability in detecting roots with different orient...

Progress Guarantees When Composing Lock-Free Objects

Highly concurrent and reliable data objects are vital for parallel programming. Lock-free shared data objects are highly concurrent and guarantee that at least one operation, from a set of concurrently executed operations, finishes after a finite number of steps regardless of the state of the other operations. Lock-free data objects provide progress guarantees on the object level. In this paper...

A framework for implementing objects and scheduling tasks in lock-free real-time systems

We present an integrated framework for developing realtime systems in which lock-free algorithms are employed to implement shared objects. There are two key objectives of our work. The first is to enable functionality for object sharing in lock-free real-time systems that is comparable to that in lock-based systems. Our main contribution toward this objective is an efficient approach for implem...
