The Wage Rate Estimation Using the Heckman Procedure
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper estimates wage rates using the Heckman Procedure and a tra ditional method. The estimation becomes necessary when the analysis requires a measure of the individual's opportunity cost of time. Since a large fraction of the adults in the sample do not participate in the labor market, the simple estimation by ordinary least squares would cause bias in the coefficients. Labor force participation and the wage determination equations were estimated for men and women from 16 to 71 years old. Most of the coefficients were statistically significant at 10% level and presented the expected signs. It was found an upward biased (in absolute value) estimate for male workers and a downward biased (in absolute value) estimate for the female workers when using the traditional method

Analysis of Factors Affecting Canola Plantation Development in Tabriz and Marand Counties, Iran
This study identifies and analyzes factors influencing canola plantation development in Tabriz and Marand Counties. The Censored Model was used to analyze cross-sectional data collected from 372 farmers using a questionnaire. Due to the weakness of the Tobit Model in separating factors affecting the adoption decision of farmers and factors affecting the rate of adoption, the Heckman Model was e...
متن کاملEstimating distributions of potential outcomes using local instrumental variables with an application to changes in college enrollment and wage inequality
This paper extends the method of local instrumental variables developed by Heckman and Vytlacil (1999, 2001, 2005) to the estimation of not only means, but also distributions of potential outcomes. The newly developed method is illustrated by applying it to changes in college enrollment and wage inequality using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth of 1979. Increases in college e...
متن کاملAbility, Sorting and Wage Inequality
Wage inequality has increased dramatically over the last 30 to 40 years in the US and in the UK (see, for example, Autor and Katz, 1999). Economists have devoted a substantial amount of work to the documentation and interpretation of the evolution of wage inequality and several of its dimensions, such as the skill premium, or racial and gender wage gaps. One variable whose role is often stresse...
متن کاملThe Evolution of Labor Earnings Risk in the U.S. Economy∗
A large body of literature has documented an increase in wage inequality over the 1970’s and 1980’s (see, for example, Levy and Murnane, 1992). This increase in wage inequality has occurred both within and between education-experience groups. While the former unfolds during the 1970’s, the latter is experienced over the 1980’s. Recent studies show that these trends are weakened in the 1990’s. T...
