چکیده

Evidence is lacking on whether the duration and timing of low socioeconomic position (SEP) across a person’s life course may be associated with incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). The authors’ objectives were to investigate associations between cumulative SEP and the incidence of T2D in the Framingham Offspring Study (n 1⁄4 1,893; 52% women; mean baseline age 1⁄4 34 years). Pooled logistic regression analyses demonstrated that age-adjusted cumulative SEP was associated with T2D in women (for low vs. high cumulative SEP, odds ratio (OR) 1⁄4 1.92, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.08, 3.42). Age-adjusted analyses for young-adulthood SEP (7.85 for 12 vs. >16 years of education, OR 1⁄4 2.84, 95% CI: 1.03), active professional life SEP (for laborer vs. professional/executive/supervisory/technical occupations, OR 1⁄4 2.40, 95% CI: 1.05, 5.47), and social-mobility frameworks (for declining life-course SEP, OR 1⁄4 2.99, 95% CI: 1.39, 6.44; for stable low vs. stable high life-course SEP, OR 1⁄4 1.85, 95% CI: 1.02, 3.35) all demonstrated associations between low SEP and T2D incidence in women. No association was observed between childhood SEP and T2D in women for father’s education (some high school or less vs. any postsecondary education, OR 1⁄4 1.26, 95% CI: 0.72, 2.22). In men, there was little evidence of associations between life-course SEP and T2D incidence. These findings suggest that cumulative SEP is inversely associated with incidence of T2D in women, and that this association may be primarily due to the women’s educational levels and occupations.

Familial aggregation of stroke. The Framingham Study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Family history is perceived to be an important risk factor for stroke despite conflicting published data. We examined patterns of familial aggregation of stroke among three generations using data from the Framingham Study. METHODS Cox proportional hazards analyses, adjusting for known stroke risk factors, were used to examine familial concordance in three groups: (1) me...

Parent-offspring association of metabolic syndrome in the Framingham Heart Study

BACKGROUND Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a clustering of five metabolic risk factors including abdominal obesity, elevated blood pressure, hypertriglyceridemia, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and impaired fasting glucose. Few studies have fully reported the strength of clustering of these risk factors in a parent-offspring relationship. This analysis describes the associations...

Association of Parental Hypertension With Arterial Stiffness in Nonhypertensive Offspring: The Framingham Heart Study.

High arterial stiffness seems to be causally involved in the pathogenesis of hypertension. We tested the hypothesis that offspring of parents with hypertension may display higher arterial stiffness before clinically manifest hypertension, given that hypertension is a heritable condition. We compared arterial tonometry measures in a sample of 1564 nonhypertensive Framingham Heart Study third-gen...

Characteristics of Framingham offspring participants with long-lived parents.

BACKGROUND Prior research has suggested that delay or avoidance of cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular disease risk factors plays an important role in longevity. METHODS We studied 1697 Framingham Heart Study (FHS) offspring members 30 years or older, whose parents (1) participated in the original FHS cohort and (2) achieved age 85 years or died before January 1, 2005. Offspring partici...

The 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and insulin resistance in the Framingham Offspring Cohort.

OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between a diet consistent with the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA), as assessed by the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans Adherence Index (DGAI), and measures of insulin resistance in the Framingham Heart Study Offspring Cohort. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We examined cross-sectional associations between DGAI score...
