How fit is OWL to represent realist ontologies? The semantics of representational units in realist ontologies and the Web Ontology Language
نویسندگان
چکیده
Ontological realism is a philosophical stance that provides a definitional framework for ontologies and is referred to by various applied ontologists. From a computer science perspective, ontologies are often associated with formal languages for the representation of ontologies like the Web Ontology Language (OWL). It has, however, not been made explicit how the realist framework is related to the representation formalism. We analyse how the representational units of OWL can be used for modelling realist ontologies. While OWL is sufficiently close to the realist framework of ontologies to describe them, there are categories in OWL that are alien to realist ontologies or duplicate categories in realist ontologies. This clarification allows separating talk about ontologies in general from talk about their specific representation.

Presenting a method for extracting structured domain-dependent information from Farsi Web pages
Extracting structured information about entities from web texts is an important task in web mining, natural language processing, and information extraction. Information extraction is useful in many applications including search engines, question-answering systems, recommender systems, machine translation, etc. An information extraction system aims to identify the entities from the text and extr...
متن کاملVisualizing and Editing Ontology Fragments with OWLGrEd
The OWLGrEd ontology editor allows graphical visualization and authoring of OWL 2.0 ontologies using a compact yet intuitive presentation that combines UML class diagram notation with textual Manchester syntax for class expressions. Here we show, how to integrate OWLGrEd with ontology module mechanism from OWL API to obtain on-demand ontology fragment visualization that is essential for many ex...
متن کاملContextualizing ontologies
Ontologies are shared models of a domain that encode a view which is common to a set of different parties. Contexts are local models that encode a party’s subjective view of a domain. In this paper we show how ontologies can be contextualized, thus acquiring certain useful properties that a pure shared approach cannot provide. We say that an ontology is contextualized or, also, that it is a con...
متن کاملCentralized Clustering Method To Increase Accuracy In Ontology Matching Systems
Ontology is the main infrastructure of the Semantic Web which provides facilities for integration, searching and sharing of information on the web. Development of ontologies as the basis of semantic web and their heterogeneities have led to the existence of ontology matching. By emerging large-scale ontologies in real domain, the ontology matching systems faced with some problem like memory con...
متن کاملTowards improving phenotype representation in OWL
BACKGROUND Phenotype ontologies are used in species-specific databases for the annotation of mutagenesis experiments and to characterize human diseases. The Entity-Quality (EQ) formalism is a means to describe complex phenotypes based on one or more affected entities and a quality. EQ-based definitions have been developed for many phenotype ontologies, including the Human and Mammalian Phenotyp...
