There are two basic methods currently being used for the preparaticn of PPLO colonies for microscopic study. One methcd uses a modified agar fixation technique (Klieneberger and Smiles, J. Hyg., 42, 110, 1942) and the other a direct, stained agar technique (Dienes, J. Infectious Diseases, 65, 24, 1939). Both methods have been used and reported by other investigators to have

The growth of pleuropneumonia-like organisms of human origin: cultivation in the developing chick embryo and an in vitro growth cycle.

Some strains of pleuropneumonia-like organisms (PPLO) of human origin grow quite sparingly in vitro; therefore, attempts were made to determine if these organisms could be sustained better in the developing chick embryo. A semiquantitative comparison of growth on artificial media and in the chick embryo is presented. As pleuropneumonia-like organisms aIe frequent inhabitants of the genitourinar...

Bacteriol. 83:500-506. 1962.-The content of total lipid and nonsaponifiable lipid depended upon the type of organism; the greatest amounts were found in pleuropneumonia-like organisms that required cholesterol for growth and in L-1, the L-form of Streptob...

Electron microscope studies of pleuropneumonia like organisms isolated from man and chickens.

The characteristic colony morphology is an important distinguishing feature which is used for recognizing members of the group of pleuropneumonia-like organisms. However, characteristic colony morphology may not be apparent when the organisms are freshly isolated from the body or when the growth is crowded on the surface of solid medium. In order to determine similarities or differences among t...

Quantitative measurement of the growth of pleuropneumonia-like organisms.

Accurate and reliable methods for the quantitative measurement of the growth of pleuropneumonia-like organisms have never been developed. Studies on members of this group of organisms have advanced in recent years to the stage at which further developments will be impeded by the lack of such methods. Generally techniques employed for rapid quantitation of bacterial growth, such as turbidity, pa...
