چکیده

Most considerations of global climate change caused by human activities, including the Kyoto convention (1), have focused on the warming influence of greenhouse gases (2). However, aerosols are another important atmospheric constituent that influences climate and has been affected by human activities (3, 4). Aerosol particles increase scattering and absorption of shortwave (solar) radiation (5, 6), increase cloud reflectance (5, 7), enhance cloud lifetimes (8), and suppress precipitation (9, 10). These phenomena are all thought to exert a cooling influence on climate. Recently, Rosenfeld (9) presented results demonstrating that anthropogenic aerosols reduce cloud droplet size and suppress precipitation downwind of major urban areas and industrial facilities, consistent with earlier hypotheses (7, 8). Now, a major study, the Indian Ocean Experiment (INDOEX) (11), has extensively documented several of these phenomena and a report from this group (12) has identified yet another important effect of anthropogenic aerosols on clouds.

On the basis of general considerations, we propose a Langevin equation accounting for critical phenomena occurring in the presence of two symmetric absorbing states. We study its phase diagram by mean-field arguments and direct numerical integration in physical dimensions. Our findings fully account for and clarify the intricate picture known so far from the aggregation of partial results obtai...

Finite-Element Formulation of Acoustic Scattering Phenomena with Absorbing Boundary-Condition in the Frequency-Domain

This paper discusses a finite element formulation with an absorbing boundary condition to simulate acoustic scattering phenomena in a general situation, that is, including density as well as sound velocity variations of single and multi-scatterers of arbitrary two-dimensional cross sections. In this model, a Galerkin finite element formulation is incorporated with an absorbing boundary operator...

Prediction of trapping rates in mixtures of partially absorbing spheres

The combined effects of diffusion and reaction in heterogeneous media govern the behavior of a wide variety of physical and biological phenomena, including the consumption of nutrients by cells and the study of magnetic relaxation in tissues. We have considered the so-called ‘‘trapping problem,’’ in which diffusion takes place exterior to a collection of fixed traps while reaction occurs at the...

Two-Species Branching Annihilating Random Walks with One Offspring

The last decades have seen considerable efforts to understand nonequilibrium absorbing phase transitions from an active phase into an absorbing phase consisting of absorbing states [1]. Once the system is trapped into an absorbing state, it can never escape from the state. Various one dimensional lattice models exhibiting absorbing transitions have been studied, and most of them turn out to bel...

Electronic Decay of Molecular Clusters : Non - Stationary States Computed

Cationic inner valence states of molecular clusters have recently been shown to decay via a novel intermolecular mechanism. To compute the lifetimes and energies of the non-stationary states, we advocate the strategy to use standard quantum chemistry procedures augmented by complex absorbing potentials. A new and eecient complex absorbing potential has been implemented to take the non-compact g...
