GPIB and Ethernet: Selecting the Better Instrument Control Bus
نویسنده
چکیده
Ethernet, with its higher bandwidth and ubiquitous usage, seems a natural alternative to the market-leading GPIB instrument control bus for automating instruments. However, it’s not always an accurate conclusion. There are many factors to consider when determining which bus provides better performance. Most important are the bus bandwidth and latency, the device-side instrument control hardware and software implementation, and the host-side software. With the recent introduction of several instruments with Ethernet and GPIB ports, National Instruments (NI) decided to compare the actual bus performance of Ethernet and GPIB in typical test use cases. The company is testing different types of instruments with multiple buses from multiple vendors. Even at this early stage, the results indicate that the optimal bus is use-casespecific because neither bus was better at all tasks.

An Introduction to Modular Waveform Digitizers
A digitizer is an electronic acquisition device that acquires analog waveforms, processes them through analog-to-digital converters (ADC’s) and sends the digitized sample to a buffer, which allows them to be saved before being processed by a computer. Historically, modern digitizers date from the 1950’s and 60’s when the need to rapidly acquire, store, and process multiple channels of data beca...

Ethernet is being considered as the backbone network protocol for next-generation automotive control networks. In such networks, Controller Area Network (CAN) messages related to automotive control can be sent from a CAN network to other sub-networks via the backbone Ethernet bus and, if the CAN messages have real-time constraints, these have to be guaranteed. This paper presents a simulation e...
متن کاملAn I/O Subnet for the APS Control System – The BITBUS Universal Gateway*
The Advanced Photon Source (APS) control system is based on a distributed topology of microprocessor–based Input/Output Controllers (IOCs). Since the cost effectiveness of placing an IOC near every point where an interface to the control system is required may be prohibitive, I/O subnets implemented via message passing network protocols are utilized. For greatest flexibility, such a subnet must...

This paper presents a protocol proposal that makes Ethernet suitable for supporting modern real-time systems. Applications that could benefit from the proposed protocol are mainly those composed of heterogeneous distributed components, which are specified in terms of both hard and soft timing constraints. Indeed, using the proposed protocol, hard and soft real-time tasks can efficiently and pre...
