Novel Risk Factors for Glaucoma
نویسنده
چکیده
CEREBROSPINAL FLUID PRESSURE Evidence supports the association of low cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure with the prevalence of glaucoma, particularly with respect to normal-tension glaucoma (NTG). The most robust study comes from Tongren Hospital in Beijing, China, in which patients with both high-tension and normal-tension open-angle glaucoma as well as healthy controls underwent lumbar punctures.1 Their CSF and translaminar (IOP minus the CSF pressure) pressures were compared. Those diagnosed with NTG had significantly lower CSF pressures than patients with high-tension open-angle glaucoma and control subjects. Furthermore, the translaminar pressure was significantly higher in the NTG group than in the control group. Although these findings help clinicians to understand the mechanistic aspects of glaucoma’s development, the clinical applications are limited because there is no clinically safe method of elevating CSF pressure, even if that were shown to prevent glaucomatous progression.

What is the Real Cause of Glaucoma?
Introduction: The term glaucoma refers to a group of diseases that have a characteristic optic neuropathy with associated visual field loss in common. Intraocular pressure has been considered to be the only causal factor for glaucoma and the only factor that can be manipulated to alter the course of the disease. But considering high intraocular pressure as the only factor responsible for glauco...

In an elegant example of bench-to-bedside research, a hypothesis that cells in the outflow pathway actively regulate conventional outflow resistance was proposed in the 1990s and systematically pursued, exposing novel cellular and molecular mechanisms of intraocular pressure (IOP) regulation. The critical discovery that pharmacologic manipulation of the cytoskeleton of outflow pathway cells dec...
متن کاملGlaucoma Surgery in Pregnancy: A Case Series and Literature Review
AbstractGlaucoma management in pregnant patients is a real challenge, especially when the glaucoma is not controlled with medications. We report the results of 6 incisional glaucoma surgeries for the management of medically uncontrolled glaucoma patients during pregnancy. This retrospective, case series was conducted on the 6 eyes of 3pregnant patients with uncontrolled glaucoma using maximum t...
متن کاملNovel therapies for open-angle glaucoma
Open-angle glaucoma is a multifactorial optic neuropathy characterized by progressive loss of retinal ganglion cells and their axons. It is an irreversible disease with no established cure. The only currently approved treatment is aimed at lowering intraocular pressure, the most significant risk factor known to date. However, it is now clear that there are other risk factors involved in glaucom...

Objective(s):Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness and it is related to oxidative stress based on numerous studies. Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are members of multigenic family, which have important role in cells as an antioxidant. In the present study, we examined the polymorphism of GSTT1 and GSTM1 deletion genotypes (T0M1, T1M0, and T0M0) in 100 Glaucoma patients (41with pr...
متن کاملClinical appraisal of tafluprost in the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension
An elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is one of the most important risk factors for the development of glaucoma, which causes progressive optic neuropathy. Lowering IOP is currently the only therapeutic approach to the treatment of glaucoma. Tafluprost, a novel prostaglandin analogue, was recently launched onto the market as an ocular hypotensive agent. Tafluprost is potent in its affinity for...
