Effects of particle mixtures and nozzle geometry on entrainment into volcanic jets

چکیده
Efficient turbulent entrainment causes otherwise dense volcanic jets to rise high into the atmosphere as buoyant plumes. Classical models suggest that the inflow of air is 10–15% of the axial velocity, giving predictions for the height of the plume and, in turn, the composition and structure of the resulting umbrella clouds. Crucially, entrainment is assumed independent of source geometry and mechanically unaffected by the pyroclastic mixture properties. We show that particle inertia and vent geometry act to modify the shape of the largest eddies defining the jet’s edge and thus entrainment of the ambient. Whereas particle-free flows are essentially unaffected by vent shape, entrainment into particle-laden flows is enhanced for flared vents and reduced for cylindrical vents. Our results predict that vent erosion during an explosive eruption reduces the height of volcanic jets, alters the structure and sedimentation regime of the umbrella cloud, and the resulting deposit.

Entrainment Characteristics of Turbulent Round Gas Jets Submerged in Water
The entrainment process in two-phase buoyant jets differs significantly from their singlephase counterparts, and is not well understood. Entrainment models developed for singlephase flow are often used in two-phase jetting simulations, albeit with limited success. In this work, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and shadowgraph flow visualization experiments have been conducted on submerged round...
متن کاملEffects of operating parameters on time-dependent ash entrainment behaviour of a sample coal flotation
It is well-known that entrainment of particles into the froth is a key factor in the selectivity and performance of the flotation process, especially for fine particle recovery. Since flotation is a continuous process, in this work, the effects of operating parameters on the entrainment of ash materials in a sample coal flotation is investigated from a time-sequence viewpoint. The effects of th...
متن کاملUpstream entrainment in numerical simulations of spatially evolving round jets
Direct numerical simulation is used to study the effect of entrainment near the inflow nozzle on spatially evolving round jets. Inflow entrainment is obtained by providing a buffer region upstream of the inflow nozzle. Simulations are performed at Reynolds numbers of 300 (laminar) and 2400 (turbulent), respectively. Simulations without the inflow buffer are contrasted to those with the buffer r...
متن کاملInvestigation of the Local Nusselt Number of the Symmetrical Liquid-Liquid Jets Emitting from a Nozzle
The aim of this paper is to study the local Nusselt number of the symmetrical liquid-liquid jets emitting from a nozzle. Equations obtained from theoretical works are arranged in the form of a computerized model. The validity of this model was tested by the data from an experimental paper [1]. After few adjustments the model predicted the experimental data with a reasonable accuracy. Making...
