To see and see through graphics - Toward affordance- driven geovisualization

From the technical point of view, it is possible for a developer to embed and visualize as much information as possible in an open-ended virtual geographic environment, meanwhile, allow the user to interactively query and manipulate the information. However, the design and interpretation hitherto is a more or less blind experiment. In order to raise the awareness of this problem, the author revisits two concepts affordance and reflex level which were separately developed for product design and image understanding. The affordance indicates the actionable properties of a thing, whereas the reflex level characterizes the mental processes in a human brain. A synergetic effect of these two concepts is elucidated and analyzed with examples from graphic user interfaces and visualization patterns in virtual geographic environments. With the objective of maximizing the information communication at minimum cognition cost, the author suggests an affordance-driven approach of geovisualization.
