Fitness Probability Distribution of Bit-Flip Mutation

چکیده
Bit-flip mutation is a common mutation operator for evolutionary algorithms applied to optimize functions over binary strings. In this paper, we develop results from the theory of landscapes and Krawtchouk polynomials to exactly compute the probability distribution of fitness values of a binary string undergoing uniform bit-flip mutation. We prove that this probability distribution can be expressed as a polynomial in p, the probability of flipping each bit. We analyze these polynomials and provide closed-form expressions for an easy linear problem (Onemax), and an NP-hard problem, MAX-SAT. We also discuss a connection of the results with runtime analysis.

Genetic Programming parity with only XOR is not elementary. GP parity can be represented as the sum of k/2 + 1 elementary landscapes. Statistics, including fitness distance correlation (FDC), of Parity’s fitness landscape are calculated. Using Walsh analysis the eigen values and eigenvectors of the Laplacian of the two bit flip fitness landscape are given. Tests support λ/d as a measure of the ...
متن کاملConvergence Rates For The Distribution Of Program Outputs
Fitness distributions (landscapes) of programs tend to a limit as they get bigger. Markov chain convergence theorems give general upper bounds on the linear program sizes needed for convergence. Tight bounds (exponential in N , N logN and smaller) are given for five computer models (any, average, cyclic, bit flip and Boolean). Mutation randomizes a genetic algorithm population in 1 4 (l + 1)(lo...
متن کاملConvergence of Program Fitness Landscapes
Point mutation has no effect on almost all linear programs. In two genetic programming (GP) computers (cyclic and bit flip) we calculate the fitness evaluations needed using steepest ascent and first ascent hill climbers and evolutionary search. We describe how the average fitness landscape scales with program length and give general bounds.
متن کاملAdaptive Group Mutation for Tackling Deception in Genetic Search
In order to study the efficacy of genetic algorithms (GAs), a number of fitness landscapes have been designed and used as test functions. Among these functions a family of deceptive functions have been developed as difficult test functions for comparing different implementations of GAs. In this paper an adaptive group mutation (AGM), which can be combined with traditional bit mutation in GAs, i...
