Gradient Well-Formedness in Harmonic Grammar: Phonological Performance as a Window on Phonological Competence

چکیده

In this paper, I argue that phonological performance data provide information about phonological competence. An adequate model of phonological competence must hence be able to account for significant patterns observed in phonological performance data. Based on two word-likeness experiments, I point out some typical properties of phonological performance data, and then show how these properties can be accounted for in Harmonic Grammar.

1 Linking speech errors and phonological grammars :

Phonological grammars characterize distinctions between relatively well-formed (unmarked) and relatively ill-formed (marked) phonological structures. We review evidence that markedness influences speech error probabilities. Specifically, although errors result in both unmarked as well as marked structures, there is a markedness asymmetry: errors are more likely to produce unmarked outcomes. We ...

Grammar is both categorical and gradient 1

In this paper, I discuss the results of word-likeness rating experiments with Hebrew and English speakers that show that language users use their grammar in a categorical and a gradient manner. In word-likeness rating tasks, subjects make the categorical distinction between grammatical and ungrammatical – they assign all grammatical forms equally high ratings and all ungrammatical forms equally...

Stochastic Phonology

In classic generative phonology, linguistic competence in the area of sound structure is modeled by a phonological grammar. The theory takes a grammatical form because it posits an inventory of categories (such as features, phonemes, syllables or feet) and a set of principles which specify the well-formed combinations of these categories. In any particular language, a particular set of principl...

The interface between morphology and phonology: exploring a morpho-phonological deficit in spoken production.

Morphological and phonological processes are tightly interrelated in spoken production. During processing, morphological processes must combine the phonological content of individual morphemes to produce a phonological representation that is suitable for driving phonological processing. Further, morpheme assembly frequently causes changes in a word's phonological well-formedness that must be ad...

Optionality and Gradience in Persian Phonology: An Optimality Treatment

The distribution of the allophones of /?/in certain contexts involves free variation and gradient preferences. An organized survey was conducted to elicit the judgments of 37 native Persian speakers concerning the well-formedness of /?/allophonic behavior in five different phonological positions. The results showed that the differences in judgment between the various categories are not just t...
