Motion detection in goldfish investigated with the optomotor response is “color blind”

چکیده
The action spectrum of the optomotor response in goldfish was measured to investigate which of the four cone types involved in color vision contributes to motion detection. In the dark-adapted state, the action spectrum showed a single maximum in the range of 500-520 nm, and resembled the rod spectral sensitivity function. Surprisingly, the action spectrum measured in the light-adapted state also revealed a single maximum only, located in the long wavelength range between 620 and 660 nm. A comparison with spectral sensitivity functions of the four cone types suggests that motion detection is dominated by the L-cone type. Using a two colored, "red-green" cylinder illuminated with two monochromatic lights separately adjustable in intensity, it could be shown that motion vision is "color-blind": the optomotor response disappeared whenever "isoluminant" red and green stripes were offered. Under this condition, calculations revealed that the L-cones were only slightly modulated by the "red-green" stimulus.

Wavelength dependence of the optomotor response in zebrafish (Danio rerio)
The action spectrum of motion detection in zebrafish (Danio rerio) was measured using the optomotor response in the light adapted state. The function has a single maximum at 550-600 nm, and is similar to the spectral sensitivity function of the L-cone type in the mid and long wavelength range. At shorter wavelengths the values of three of the five fish tested are lower. As in goldfish [Vis. Res...
متن کاملSensitivity of the Goldfish Motion Detection System Revealed by Incoherent Random Dot Stimuli: Comparison of Behavioural and Neuronal Data
BACKGROUND Global motion detection is one of the most important abilities in the animal kingdom to navigate through a 3-dimensional environment. In the visual system of teleost fish direction-selective neurons in the pretectal area (APT) are most important for global motion detection. As in all other vertebrates these neurons are involved in the control of slow phase eye movements during gaze s...
متن کاملThe role of the pattern edge in goldfish visual motion detection.
To understand the function of edges in perception of moving objects, we defined four questions to answer. Is the focus point in visual motion detection of a moving object: (1) the body or the edge of the object, (2) the leading edge or trailing edge of the object, (3) different in scotopic, mesopic and photopic luminance levels, or (4) different for colored objects? We measured the Optomotor Re...
متن کاملMotion vision is independent of color in Drosophila.
Whether motion vision uses color contrast is a controversial issue that has been investigated in several species, from insects to humans. We used Drosophila to answer this question, monitoring the optomotor response to moving color stimuli in WT and genetic variants. In the fly eye, a motion channel (outer photoreceptors R1-R6) and a color channel (inner photoreceptors R7 and R8) have been dist...
متن کاملOn Rate of Goldfish Optic Nerve R Egeneration: a Radioautographic and Behavioral Study
Optic nerve regeneration was examined in goldfish radioautographically, as well as by a variety of behavioral measures of visual function. The rate of regeneration was markedly enhanced by increasing temperature above the ambient level (20 °C). The earliest functional indication of recovery was the appearance of an autonomic response to a change in illumination, then the ability to localize foo...
