Hyalinizing Trabecular Neoplasm of the Thyroid: Controversies in Management
نویسندگان
چکیده
Objectives/Hypothesis: To review the clinical and pathological picture of hyalinizing trabecular neoplasm of the thyroid [HTN] and compare HTN with papillary thyroid carcinoma [PTC] in order to discuss the appropriate management of this uncommon but potentially confusing neoplasm. Study Design: A case review of a patient with HTN treated at our institution. Methods: Case review and MEDLINE literature search. Results: Although recognized as a tumor of uncertain malignant potential in the pathology literature, HTN has been rarely reported in otolaryngology journals, and its management remains controversial. HTN and PTC share similar histopathological characteristics and have been described as coexistent lesions in the same thyroid. HTN's have also exhibited proto-oncogenes associated with PTC. Moreover, recent reports have described cases of HTN exhibiting vascular or capsular invasion and metastases. Conclusions: HTN should still be considered a neoplasm of uncertain malignant potential. Criteria for the treatment of HTN have yet to be determined, and many investigators are concerned about the prudence of making broad recommendations on the basis of a few studied cases. Nonetheless, when discussing surgical treatment options and recommendations for postoperative monitoring and radionuclide ablation in patients diagnosed with HTN, physicians may be guided by the criteria for the treatment of PTC at their respective institutions.

Hyalinizing Trabecular Adenoma of Thyroid : A Rare Case Report
Introduction: Hyalinizing trabecular tumor (HTT) is an unusual thyroid neoplasm that was first described by Carney in 1987.Many cytological and histological features of such tumors may be mistaken for Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma (PTC) and Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma (MTC).This can lead to overtreatment like total thyroidectomy and lymph node dissection. Here, we present a rare case of hyalinizi...

BACKGROUND/AIMS Hyalinizing trabecular tumors are rare neoplasms of the thyroid gland often mistaken for thyroid carcinoma on fine-needle aspiration. We review the distinguishing characteristics of hyalinizing trabecular tumors and their management. METHODS We present the case of a patient diagnosed with papillary thyroid carcinoma on fine-needle aspiration as well as a review of the literatu...

Hyalinizing trabecular neoplasm (HTN) is an uncommon, controversial lesion of thyroid. In its cytological and histopathological features, HTN mimics papillary and medullary carcinoma and usually misdiagnosed on fine needle aspiration cytology specimens. Pure HTN lesions are neoplams of very low malignant potential. Hemithyroidecomy is an adequate treatment; however, misinterpretation leads to t...

In 1987, Carney et al described a rare thyroid tumor termed hyalinizing trabecular adenoma presenting characteristics consisting of a trabecular growth pattern and hyalinizing stroma. In subsequent reports, the observed nuclear features and RET alterations led this tumor to be linked to papillary carcinoma. Subsequent reports concerning hyalinizing trabecular carcinoma further complicated its c...

The hyalinizing trabecular adenoma is a rare lesion of the thyroid. There is controversy in the literature about the correct name for this disease. Dr. Carney defended the benign nature of this condition and therefore continues calling it adenoma, the World Health Organization calls for the potential of tumor malignancy, and others qualify it as a variant of papillary carcinoma based on the pre...
